About Schachblumenfest

The Schachblumenfest Hetlingen celebrates every year in April the blooming of one of Germany's most endangered lilies: the snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris). Hetlingen is home to one of the largest populations of this protected species in Northern Germany. During guided meadow walks, you can admire the characteristic checkered violet—or rarer white—blooms in the Elbmarsch. The event is organized by the Elbmarschenhaus Haseldorf in cooperation with the NABU. Free admission.

A Threatened Beauty Blooms in the Elbmarsch

The snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) is one of the most unusual flowers in the North German flora—a delicate lily with hanging bell-shaped flowers, whose violet petals feature a characteristic checkerboard pattern. White variants are rarely found. In Germany, the species is considered highly endangered—its main distribution area is in moist meadows along riverbanks, and the Elbmarsch near Hetlingen offers precisely these conditions.

One of Germany's Largest Populations

The snake's head fritillary meadows in front of the old dike in Hetlingen host one of the largest and most significant populations of this endangered species in Germany. Thousands of blooms turn the marshland violet in April—a natural spectacle rarely experienced with such density anywhere in Germany.

The Program

  • NABU guided tours in the late afternoon (5:30 PM - 7:00 PM) — expert explanations on the snake's head fritillary, its ecosystem, and conservation measures
  • Daytime tours (11:00 AM - 4:00 PM) — open to walkers
  • Possible plant sale — depending on the year
  • Free admission

When Exactly Do the Snake's Head Fritillaries Bloom?

The blooming period is weather-dependent. In past years, the peak bloom has occurred in the second half of April. The exact festival date is set annually at short notice—often only two weeks before the event, depending on when the main bloom begins. Registration via the Elbmarschenhaus Haseldorf.

In the Pinneberg District

Hetlingen is located in the Pinneberg district on the Lower Elbe, about 30 km northwest of Hamburg. The Schachblumenfest is an initiative of the Integrierten Station Unterelbe (ISU), the Elbmarschenhaus Haseldorf, and the NABU — a nature conservation festival that equally combines nature protection, nature experience, and regional identity.

Schachblumenfest — edition 2026

The Schachblumenfest Hetlingen 2026 is scheduled for late April — the exact date will be announced at short notice and depends on the peak bloom of the snake's head fritillaries. The program includes daytime tours of the snake's head fritillary meadows (11 AM–4 PM) and NABU-guided late afternoon tours (5:30 PM–7:00 PM). Registration via the Elbmarschenhaus Haseldorf is recommended. Free admission.

Bloom 2026 — Date Announced Shortly

As every year, the exact festival date for 2026 will be set by the Elbmarschenhaus Haseldorf depending on the blooming status of the snake's head fritillaries — usually mid to late April. Registration for the guided tours is recommended, as the number of participants per tour is limited.
