Two days of medieval spectacle on the Rathausplatz
When the wooden stalls are set up on the second weekend of October 2026, the everyday backdrop of Wedel's Rathausplatz will almost completely disappear for two days. In its place, merchants' stalls with handmade knives, leather goods, wool felt, candles, incense, and mead will appear. Traders and craftsmen in contemporary-looking clothing will demonstrate their crafts and invite participation – a scene that fits harmoniously into the historically shaped cityscape around the Roland and Wedel's town hall.
The concept includes performances by travelling musicians with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and shawm, storytellers for the younger guests, and show fight groups demonstrating the craft of swordsmanship. Medieval dishes such as Flammkuchen, Stick bread, candied almonds, and hearty stews from the cauldron ensure culinary well-being, accompanied by mead, beer, and hot Hypocras (spiced wine).
The Handelskontor is part of a broad-based Wedel event weekend with the traditional Sunday shopping. Those who visit the market can simultaneously explore the shops in Wedel's city center and spend a relaxing autumn day in the northern commuter belt of Hamburg.
The town of Wedel is located in the Pinneberg district in Schleswig-Holstein, directly on the Elbe river and right on the Hamburg city limits. With the Handelskontor, the historic market rights town celebrates its long tradition as a hub for trade and crafts on the Lower Elbe. The event is organized by Wedel Marketing e.V. in cooperation with Schlangenschrein-Events.
On Saturday, October 10th, and Sunday, October 11th, 2026, Wedel's Rathausplatz will once again transform into a medieval market. The exact opening hours and the full program will be announced by the city of Wedel and the organizer Schlangenschrein-Events in the weeks leading up to the event on the official channels.
Combined with the Sunday shopping, the Handelskontor forms the autumn highlight in Wedel's event calendar.
The exact program times for 2026 have not yet been published at the time of announcement. As a rule, the market is open from Saturday afternoon until late evening and on Sunday until early evening. Performances by the musicians take place several times a day in the central market area, and the show fight groups usually perform their demonstrations in the morning and late afternoon. The organizer will announce precise times via the event page of the city of Wedel as well as on the Facebook page of Wedel Marketing.
