Cinema leaves the hall — and comes to you
"Raus ins Quartier! The Film Festival" is Freiburg's unique film festival concept: Instead of concentrating on a central festival cinema, the festival distributes its screenings across all of Freiburg's districts on May 9 and 10, 2026. Community centres, schools, cultural centres, and open spaces in the neighbourhoods become venues. The concept strengthens the identity of the districts and makes film visible as a communal experience.
District-specific curation
Each district — from Stühlinger to Vauban, Wiehre, Herdern, Zähringen, Littenweiler to Haslach and Rieselfeld — presents its own film screenings, often chosen in relation to the respective neighbourhood: documentaries about the district's history, feature films on social issues, short films from local film workshops, or family films at family venues. The selection is made jointly with the neighbourhood associations and community centres.
Program and Times
The festival runs on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 6 PM to 10 PM and on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 7 PM. Saturday evening primarily features evening screenings with discussions — films that invite reflection and lead to conversations with filmmakers and the audience after the screening. Sunday is aimed at families during the day (animated films, children's short films, film workshops) and back to adults from the afternoon onwards.
Film culture as neighbourhood culture
The organizer is the City of Freiburg in cooperation with the Freiburg Tourist Information and the city's community centres. The format is part of a broader commitment to decentralized cultural work — the idea of not centralizing culture in the city centre, but carrying it into all districts. With its 23 districts and strong neighbourhood work, Freiburg is considered a nationwide model for this form of cultural mediation.
Freiburg im Breisgau — Film city on the edge of the Black Forest
The university city, with around 235,000 inhabitants, located between the Black Forest and the Vosges, has been home to numerous film initiatives for decades: the Kommunales Kino Freiburg, the Kandelhof-Kino, the film workshop of the Pädagogische Hochschule, and several independent art-house cinemas. "Raus ins Quartier!" complements this film landscape with a decentralized festival variant that prioritizes neighbourhood culture.
