20 Years of Courtyard Music in Dresden's Pieschen District — Sankt Pieschen from June 5th to 7th, 2026
Pieschen is one of Dresden's most vibrant and alternative districts: a Wilhelminian-era quarter in the north of the Saxon state capital, interspersed with backyard structures, small workshops, independent cultural venues, and an active civil society. With Sankt Pieschen, this district celebrates its own festival — entirely supported by the association Sankt Pieschen e.V. and a network of around a hundred volunteers. From June 5th to 7th, 2026, the festival celebrates 20 years of Hofmusik: concerts and performances take place in backyards, cellars, workshops, on Konkordienplatz, and in Bürgerstraße. The concept of decentralized "Hofmusik" with several parallel venues gives the festival an unusual intimacy and a very unique character — Dresden, Saxony, Dresden City District, Pieschen District.
For three days, several stages of different sizes will host events throughout the quarter. The association's stage at Konkordienstraße 58 (the association's headquarters) is the main stage with concerts starting at 6 PM. Ostpol, a neighbouring event venue, sets up its own stage on Konkordienplatz. "Kap der guten Hoffnungen" on Rosa-Steinhart-Straße is managed by KaPiesch e.V., the Weindorf at the corner of Bürgerstraße focuses on singer-songwriters and folk, and the Pro-Pieschen stage on Oschatzer Straße 5 features indie and alternative music. The program ranges from indie rock and reggae to techno and jazz, punk, folk, and hip-hop — a crossover spectrum that comprehensively reflects Dresden's alternative music scene.
In addition to the concerts, there is an extensive accompanying program: screen printing workshops in the workshops, artist markets with jewellery, prints, and ceramics, theatre performances in backyards, readings, and an ecumenical church service on Sunday morning. The sports component includes two fun runs on Sunday (8 km and 16 km through the streets of Pieschen). Children's programs and family activities are spread across all three days — Pieschen is also a family-friendly district with many young families.
What distinguishes Sankt Pieschen from other neighbourhood festivals is its Hofmusik atmosphere: instead of one large central stage with thousands of spectators, there are dozens of small performances in backyards, inner courtyards, cellars, and workshops. You walk from one residential street to the next, turn into a courtyard, and stumble upon a concert that only 80 people are listening to. The atmosphere is both familiar and focused — regulars know each other, newcomers discover bands they would never have heard without Sankt Pieschen. This intimacy is the festival's cultural innovation and the reason why it has survived for 20 years without major funding.
The festival has always been free to enter. It is financed by membership fees from the association, by revenue from food and drinks at Pieschen's local establishments, by small sponsorship contributions, and by visitor donations. Those who celebrate at Sankt Pieschen leave a contribution in the donation boxes — thus, the guests themselves support the concept.
Sankt Pieschen 2026 marks a double anniversary: 20 years of the decentralized Hofmusik festival in one of Dresden's most vibrant districts. From June 5th to 7th, 2026, the association Sankt Pieschen e.V., with around a hundred volunteers, transforms the district into a large concert venue with dozens of parallel performances in backyards, workshops, inner courtyards, and on the central squares.
The program includes indie rock, reggae, techno, jazz, punk, folk, and hip-hop — the full spectrum of Dresden's independent music scene. Accompanying events feature screen printing workshops, artist markets, theatre performances, an ecumenical church service on Sunday morning, and two fun runs on Sunday (8 km and 16 km).
Throughout all days: around 30 performances spread across the Vereinsbühne, Konkordienplatz, Kap der guten Hoffnungen, Weindorf, Pro-Pieschen Stage, and other backyard stages. Food from Pieschen's local establishments, beer from the Hellerau Schwarz Brewery and local microbreweries.
Free admission. Donations for the association Sankt Pieschen e.V. welcome. Food and drinks at Pieschen's local establishments and stage bars at usual prices (beer approx. €3.50–€4, vegan food €6–€9). Screen printing workshops with materials are subject to a fee (approx. €10). Fun run registration €10–€15.
