Themed market focusing on salt, herbs, and Saarland industrial culture at the historic Salzbrunnenhaus
Sulzbach, in the Saarbrücken district, was once one of the most important salt-producing sites in the Saarland. As early as the 16th century, table salt was extracted here from saline spring waters, a historic chapter of industry documented today by the preserved salt houses in the Salzbrunn district. The Salt and Herb Market directly connects to this tradition, merging industrial history with contemporary culinary offerings.
The 11th edition of the market will take place in 2026, after the tenth anniversary was celebrated with great success in 2025. Mayor Michael Adam traditionally opens the market, which is held on a Sunday in May each year. The event is organized by the town of Sulzbach/Saar in collaboration with local associations.
The market features vendors from the Saarland, the Palatinate, Lorraine, and sometimes from much further afield: exotic spices, aromatic herbs and plants, high-quality oils, vinegars, liqueurs, and fine brandies characterize the offerings. Saarland artisans showcase ceramics, wood, and textile works, and the Sulzbach Lavender Café (run by the Sulzbach Friends of Nature and the Arbeiterwohlfahrt) serves coffee and homemade cake for a good cause.
A special feature of the market is the guided tours through the historic salt houses, led by the well-known Sulzbach city guide Karsten Hehn. He explains the salt extraction process from the local brine springs, making the industrial history vivid for visitors. The Sulzbach Artists' Interest Group also adds creative touches with exhibitions and performance elements.
Sulzbach is part of the Saarbrücken district and is only a few kilometers from the state capital. The market fits into the rich event offerings of the district and is a typical example of the creative utilization of Saarland's industrial culture – similar to the Reden Experience Site, the Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site, or the Bexbach Mining Museum.
A day full of scents, regional products, and industrial history: Saarland and international vendors will present herbs, spices, liqueurs, oils, and crafts. Live music, guided tours of the historic salt houses, and culinary stands make the market a family event.
Free admission. Consumption of food, drinks, and goods at the stalls is optional.
