Sulzbach Christmas Market at the historic Salzbrunnenhaus
Sulzbach in the Saarbrücken district is a former mining town with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages – its name refers to the old brine and salt production. Today, the Salzbrunnenhaus, an industrial monument, commemorates this tradition. It is here, every Advent, that the Weihnachtlicher Sternenzauber opens its doors: a compact, charming Christmas market that deliberately avoids a mass-market feel.
The Sulzbach Christmas market has borne its current name since 2016. Before that, it was a simpler club event. The renaming to "Sternenzauber" (Star Magic) coincided with the lighting concept by Sulzbach's own light artist Ingo Wendt, who adorns the area with elaborately illuminated star decorations and blooming light installations. The effect: even before the market opens, the Salzbrunnen ensemble glows with a special radiance.
Around 20 stalls are run by Sulzbach clubs and individuals: the kindergarten support association, youth center, local history society, sports clubs, scouts, women's groups. The food is often homemade – Schwenkwürstchen (grilled sausages), Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Plätzchen (cookies), Glühwein (mulled wine), and Kinderpunsch (non-alcoholic mulled punch). A specialty is the grilled "Bergmannsspieß" (miner's skewer) from the kindergarten support association.
Mayor Michael Adam traditionally opens the market on a late Saturday afternoon with a short address and the first pour of mulled wine. Choirs from Sulzbach schools – such as the choir of the Vopeliuspark Community School – and regional ensembles contribute musically. A popular tradition is the performance by the Saarshipper, a shanty choir from Fischbach, who bring sea shanties to the Christmas market.
The Sternenzauber is small compared to the large markets in Saarbrücken or Trier – and that is precisely its strength. It's the right place for those who prefer it quiet, personal, and with local flair. Free admission, easily accessible on foot from the train station, and perfectly manageable within three to four hours.
In 2026, the city of Sulzbach/Saar plans to host the Christmas market season again at the Salzbrunnen ensemble. The concept remains unchanged: around 20 stalls from local associations, light installations by artist Ingo Wendt, the mayoral opening by Michael Adam, and musical contributions from regional choirs.
