Spritzerhof with Flammkuchen at Weingut Mathern as part of the Nahe Season Opening
The season opening at Weingut Mathern in Niederhausen an der Nahe is one of the fixed stops of the large Nahe Season Opening. On the Sunday of the opening weekend, the winery opens its „Spritzerhof” from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. – a summery courtyard tavern with Flammkuchen from a wood-fired oven, Nahe wines, and a relaxed spring atmosphere in the heart of the wine village of Niederhausen.
Niederhausen is one of the classic wine villages on the Nahe river, located between Bad Münster am Stein and Schloßböckelheim, nestled in steep slate slopes and overlooking the Rotenfels. With the season opening on April 19, 2026, the local vintners usher in their open season and invite visitors to a relaxed Sunday afternoon with wine, Flammkuchen, and spring mood.
Weingut Mathern cultivates vineyards in one of the most renowned sub-regions of the Nahe – around Niederhausen, Norheim, Oberhausen, and Schloßböckelheim. The dominant slate, volcanic rock, and sandstone soils here produce high-quality, mineral-driven Rieslings. For the season opening, the winery opens its courtyard and tavern to visitors, presenting the young vintage wines in open glasses (Schoppen).
The „Spritzerhof” is a summer form of a Straußwirtschaft (seasonal wine tavern): Benches and tables are set up in the courtyard, and wine by the glass (Schoppen), wine spritzers (Spritzer), and mineral water are served at the counter. In addition, there is Flammkuchen directly from the wood-fired oven – classic with crème fraîche, bacon, and onions, or with seasonal toppings like wild garlic, asparagus, or goat cheese. The „Spritzer” – the wine spritzer – is the typical summer refreshment of the Nahe region.
Niederhausen is picturesquely situated on the banks of the Nahe river, opposite the famous Rotenfels – at 327 meters, the highest cliff face north of the Alps. The vineyards climb steeply uphill, offering conditions that rank among Germany's best Riesling terroirs. Famous vineyard sites like the „Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle” or the „Hermannsberg” are well-known to wine lovers far beyond the region.
The Saisonauftakt Nahe is the central season opening of the Nahe wine region. Around 50 wineries and villages – from Bad Kreuznach to Idar-Oberstein, from Langenlonsheim to Meddersheim – participate with individual programs. Pop-up Straußwirtschaften, tastings, wine hikes, menus, and courtyard taverns invite you to reconnect with wine, vintners, and spring.
