Four days of harbour funfair, fish market and 'Ruhrort in Flames' at the world's largest inland port
The Ruhrorter Hafenfest is one of the traditional folk festivals of the Ruhr area, utilising one of Germany's most spectacular settings: the Duisburg Harbour, the world's largest inland port. In 2026, the festival runs from August 21st to 24th (Friday to Monday) on the Mühlenweide in Duisburg-Ruhrort. Four days of events featuring a harbour funfair, fish market, backyard flea market, live music, and the highlight: the fireworks display 'Ruhrort in Flames' over the Rhine.
The harbour funfair takes up the largest part of the festival grounds – a classic funfair with all the highlights:
A special feature of the harbour festival is the fish market – fresh fish specialities are sold right by the water, including Bismarck herring in a bun, smoked fish, fried fish, and various Matjes herring dishes. This is complemented by the backyard flea market, a classic flea market held in the surrounding streets, offering antiques, vinyl records, crockery, and curiosities – complete with a Ruhr area treasure hunt vibe.
The musical and visual highlight is the fireworks display 'Ruhrort in Flames' – usually on Saturday evening around 10:30 PM over the Rhine. Accompanied by music and choreographed pyrotechnics, it is one of the most beautiful fireworks displays in the Ruhr area. Thousands of spectators line the harbour promenade and the Rhine promenade for the approximately 25-minute show.
Live music is performed daily on the stages – from Schlager and cover bands to rock and pop, featuring regional acts and national headliners. The programme will be published shortly before the festival begins on ruhrorter-hafenfest.de and in local daily newspapers.
Ruhrort is a historically significant district in the west of Duisburg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Duisburg Harbour, covering over 19 km², is the world's largest inland port – an industrial and logistics hub of gigantic proportions where the Rhine, Ruhr, and shipping canals meet. The authentic harbour flair, the old pier structures, and the maritime atmosphere make Ruhrort a special festival location.
The organiser is Duisburg Kontor – the municipal tourism company, which also organises other major folk festivals in Duisburg (e.g., Stadtfest, Weihnachtsmarkt). Festival contact: Sabina Schumann (Tel. 0203 30525-37) and Sven Fydrich (Tel. 0203 30525-43). Detailed programme and travel information at ruhrorter-hafenfest.de.
The 2026 edition continues the four-day harbour festival format. Authentic atmosphere at the world's largest inland port – a unique backdrop that distinguishes the Ruhrorter Hafenfest from other city festivals.
