Multi-week summer culture program in Schiller's secret love — June and July
Rudolstadt — the district town of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in the German state of Thuringia — has a special cultural identity. Friedrich Schiller met Charlotte and Caroline von Lengefeld here in 1788; Goethe jokingly called Rudolstadt 'Schiller's secret love' because of this. Today, the town is primarily known for the Rudolstadt-Festival — Germany's largest festival for Folk, Roots, and World Music. However, a broader summer program has been established around the festival: the 'Rudolstädter Sommer,' which declares the town and festival concept as a summer residence.
The Rudolstädter Sommer traditionally begins with the Old Town Festival at the beginning of June — in 2026, the 32nd Rudolstädter Altstadtfest from June 5 to 7 with concerts, dance, entertainment, and culinary delights in the historic old town around the market square and Heidecksburg Castle, with free admission. This is followed in June by the Burgenland Day weekend (June 12–13), Kids Running Rudolstadt (June 20), readings, theatre performances, and open-air cinema. The highlight is the Rudolstadt-Festival from July 2 to 5, 2026 — over 300 events on more than 20 stages with acts from over 30 countries. An additional highlight: the traditional Vogelschießen (bird shooting) Volksfest from August 21 to 30.
The venues for the Rudolstädter Sommer are spread throughout the city: Heidecksburg Castle (classical music, readings), Market Square (Old Town Festival, free concerts), Heinrich Heine Park (open-air cinema), Saale Riverbank (Saalestrand with 60 tons of sand), Rudolstadt Theatre (drama), Volksbad (public bath), and Theatre im Stadthaus (readings, chamber theatre). There are events every weekend from early June to the end of July; some events are free, while others require tickets.
Heidecksburg Castle towers 60 meters above the city — one of Thuringia's largest and best-preserved residences, designed in the late Baroque and Rococo styles. During the Rudolstädter Sommer, it serves as a venue for special openings, classical concerts in the Great Hall, special exhibitions in the Castle Museum, and open-air events in the castle courtyard. The view from the castle terrace over the city and the Saale valley is one of the most beautiful in Thuringia.
From June 5 to the end of July 2026, Rudolstadt — the district town of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in southern Thuringia — is the cultural summer residence. The Old Town Festival on the weekend of June 5–7 opens the season with free admission at the Market Square, featuring a free concert program and dancing; in the following weeks, there will be readings, theatre performances, classical concerts at Heidecksburg Castle, and open-air cinema in Heinrich Heine Park. The Saale Riverbank will feature the Saalestrand (Saale Beach) with over 60 tons of sand.
The summer's highlight is the Rudolstadt-Festival from July 2 to 5, 2026: Germany's largest festival for Folk, Roots, and World Music, featuring over 300 events on more than 20 stages, with acts from over 30 countries. The focus in 2026 is on Austria, with around ten ensembles, including Agnes Palmisano (Wiener Dudler) and the English folk legend Blowzabella (one of their last concerts outside England). 4-day pass €132 (50% discount available).
