Germany's largest folk, roots, and world music festival — July 2nd to 5th, 2026 with Austria as the focus country
When the city center of Rudolstadt becomes a stage in early July, music fans from all over Europe flock to the small town on the Saale river, in the state of Thuringia, in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district. The Rudolstadt-Festival is considered the most important festival for folk, roots, and world music in the German-speaking world: not a huge open-air site like in Wacken or at the Nürburgring, but a dense network of around 30 stages, courtyards, churches, halls, and squares right in the heart of the city. The venues are almost always within walking distance, and the audience shuttles back and forth between sets, workshops, and symposia, program booklet in hand.
The festival's roots go back to 1955 — originally as the “1st Festival of German Folk Dance” in the GDR. In this form, folklore gatherings with groups from Eastern Europe took place until reunification. After reunification, the organizers completely rethought the concept in 1991: instead of a dance performance, Rudolstadt became a platform for folk, roots, and world music from all continents. Over three decades, the East German traditional festival has become an international trademark, bringing acts from around 40 countries to Thuringia every year.
Each edition highlights a guest country. In 2026, it's Austria: around ten ensembles represent the entire spectrum of today's Austrian scene — from indie-influenced voices like RIAN (with influences from hip-hop and cabaret) to the Viennese song tradition, presented by Agnes Palmisano, a leading interpreter of the Wiener Dudler (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage). Additionally, acts from more than 30 other countries will perform, including over a dozen groups as part of the partnership with the EBU Folk Festival, which brings together artists from European broadcasters.
The festival is more than just a concert festival. During the day, there are dance and vocal workshops where you can try out Irish reels, Balkan rhythms, or Austrian yodeling techniques yourself, along with artist talks and thematic symposia. The dedicated children's festival with hands-on activities attracts families from the entire region. In the evenings, world music stars and main acts share the stages with singer-songwriters, classic folk bands, electronic hybrid projects, and dance groups, before the festival continues late into the night at after-hours venues. A special feature is the house concerts in the Schillerhaus, which bring music into direct dialogue with the location in an intimate atmosphere.
For the 34th edition, the venue landscape is changing: the Heidecksburg area will not be available in 2026, but new stages are being added — including the Lutherkirche and the reopened Schillertheater. A total of over 20 stages are planned. A festival app for iOS and Android helps navigate the 300 events; a program booklet in the style of a small magazine (around 200 pages) is available on-site and is a collector's item for many fans.
From July 2nd to 5th, 2026, Rudolstadt will once again host Germany's largest folk, roots, and world music festival for the 34th time. Around 300 events, acts from over 30 countries, a focus on Austria with about ten ensembles, and the traditional EBU Folk Festival segment featuring artists from European broadcasters — all packed into four days and nearly 30 stages in the city center.
As the Heidecksburg area is not available this year, new venues are being utilized — including the Lutherkirche as a concert venue and the reopened Schillertheater. A total of over 20 stages are planned.
The complete program (around 300 events) and all stage times will be announced via the festival website and the official app (iOS / Android). The printed program booklet of about 200 pages will be available on-site.
