Traditional Easter Fire on Holy Saturday at the idyllic Ihler Meer
The municipality of Ihlow in the district of Aurich is located in the heart of East Frisia, in the middle of the region famous for its moor and water landscapes. The Ihler Meer is a small inland lake formed from old peat extraction areas and now serves as a popular local recreation area. Its location in the vast East Frisian landscape makes the lake an ideal backdrop for the traditional Easter Fire, which is lit every year on Holy Saturday.
Easter Fires have a centuries-old tradition in North Germany. They date back to pre-Christian customs where fire marked the end of winter and the beginning of the bright season. With Christianisation, the fires were integrated into the Easter festival cycle and today symbolically represent the light of the Resurrection festival. In Ihlow, the bonfire is built up in the weeks before Easter by the fire brigade and volunteer helpers; the fuel consists of collected brushwood, cuttings, and residual wood from landscape maintenance.
As darkness falls, the fire is lit. Hundreds of visitors gather on the shore of the Ihler Meer, watch the sparks fly, listen to the crackling, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the East Frisian spring night. The local volunteer fire brigade secures the event and, together with local clubs, offers snacks. The proceeds benefit the clubs' work.
Visiting the Easter Fire is free of charge. Families with children are expressly welcome; a warm jacket and sturdy footwear are recommended. In case of very wet weather, the event may be postponed or cancelled — current information will be announced by the municipality of Ihlow on its website.
The Easter Fire at Ihler Meer is part of a widespread custom in East Frisia: on almost every Holy Saturday, dozens of such fires are lit between Emden and Wittmund. The event in Ihlow is characterised by its idyllic lakeside location.
