Country musical by Jens Dammann in the open air on the historic Heilstätten grounds
In 2026, the Freilichtspiele Beelitz-Heilstätten (Open-Air Theatre Beelitz-Heilstätten) will use the historic grounds of the former lung sanatoriums as an open-air stage for the country musical "Route65" by composer and author Jens Dammann. Eight performances are scheduled — between July 16 and 26, 2026, spread across two weekends.
Beelitz-Heilstätten is one of Germany's largest former sanatorium complexes, built from 1898 onwards as a tuberculosis sanatorium for the Berlin workers' insurance. Adolf Hitler was treated here during World War I, and Soviet soldiers during World War II. Today, the striking brick and Art Nouveau buildings are partly icons of lost places, partly restored residential areas, and partly film sets — and a venue for Kultur Beelitz-Heilstätten, which has been organizing open-air theatre, concerts, and film nights for years.
"Route65" is an in-house production: Jens Dammann wrote the music, libretto, and lyrics. Country, Rock'n'Roll, and road movie narratives combine to create a grand show with a live band, dance, and acting. The story unfolds along a fictional US highway route — perfectly realized in the expansive open-air setting of the Heilstätten.
The organizer is Kultur Beelitz-Heilstätten (Culture Beelitz-Heilstätten), an organization that uses the area for cultural events — in addition to the open-air plays, there are summer concerts, summer cinema, readings, and in December, the Christmas market in the Heilstätten (December 12–13, 2026). Beelitz itself, the Brandenburg asparagus town in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, is just a few kilometers away.
