Autumn Festival in the Tauber Town
The Rothenburg Autumn Fair is, alongside the Summer Fair, the second major folk festival of the year in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It traditionally takes place from late October to early November and marks the start of the cold season. On the official tourism website, it is described as "small but nice" – a manageable but atmospheric folk festival in the heart of the World Heritage old town.
Venue: Schrannenplatz
The venue is Schrannenplatz within the historic city walls of Rothenburg. The square combines a market (household goods, textiles, seasonal items), rides primarily for children and families, and numerous food and drink stalls. With the first mulled wine of the season, the town prepares for the approaching winter.
Market and Folk Festival Character
The Autumn Fair combines two traditions: the historic market with travelling traders and stalls on the one hand, and the folk festival atmosphere with rides and stalls on the other. It thus stands in a long tradition of Franconian fairs and markets that have shaped the region's annual cycle for centuries.
Sunday with Open Shops
During the Autumn Fair, there is a Sunday with open shops: the shops in Rothenburg's city center open on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This combines the folk festival, market, and shopping in the medieval old town into a day trip.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber in western Middle Franconia is one of Germany's most famous medieval towns – with a completely preserved town wall, half-timbered houses, and a world-renowned cityscape. The Autumn Fair is one of the festivals with which the local community celebrates the annual cycle, away from the major tourist highlights.
