For one weekend at the end of April, the City Atmosphere transforms the medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber into a colourful spring stage. Stages, craft stalls, and play areas for families are set up around the market square, Würzburger Tor, and Hasa. Organised by Stadtmarketing Rothenburg since 2011 under private management, the city festival combines live music, regional delicacies, an Italian market on Kirchplatz, and a Sunday shopping event. Admission is free – the programme ranges from dance groups and Latin shows to bird of prey demonstrations for children.

The 2026 Spring City Atmosphere takes place on the weekend of April 25th and 26th, combining two full days of festivities throughout the old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. On Saturday, the programme starts at 2:00 PM, with the extended shopping evening lasting until 10:00 PM. On Sunday, the festival opens at 11:00 AM and closes at 6:00 PM, with shops opening between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Stages, craft and food stalls are located around the market square, Würzburger Tor, and Hasa. The Italian market on Kirchplatz offers specialities from Friday to Sunday, and the Lampion-Road spans Hafengasse. Two private flea markets in front of Galgentor and in the Rathausgewölbe (fire brigade charity flea market) complement the programme.

By train via Steinach (b. Rothenburg) and the Tauberbahn directly to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. By car via the A7 (exit Rothenburg ob der Tauber). The old town is car-free – paid parking spaces are available around the town wall.

The Spring City Atmosphere is Rothenburg's grand opening festival for the warmer season. For one weekend at the end of April, the famous old town between the market square, Würzburger Tor, and Hasa opens up for a two-day city festival that transforms the medieval backdrop into an open stage. While tourist groups usually fill the narrow alleys, this weekend the town belongs to the residents of Rothenburg and their guests.

History and Organisation

The event was initiated in 2008 by the association "Liebenswertes Rothenburg e.V.". Since 2011, Stadtmarketing Rothenburg ob der Tauber e.V. has been responsible for organisation as a private event organiser, shaping its profile as a family-friendly, regionally rooted spring festival – in conscious contrast to major historical spectacles like the Meistertrunk or the Reichsstadt-Festtage.

Stages, Music, and Crafts

The focus is on the stage programme in the market square with dance groups, music acts, fashion shows, and show formats. Craftsmen, regional direct marketers, and food stalls line the alleys around the market square. A dedicated Italian market with specialities from the peninsula is held on Kirchplatz, and the famous "Lampion-Road" stretches overhead in Hafengasse.

Families and Sunday Shopping

For children, there is a carousel, children's train, face painting stations, bouncy castle, and a bird of prey show. The event concludes with a Sunday shopping day in the old town, making the City Atmosphere one of the most important spring shopping destinations in Middle Franconia. The festival is embedded in the tourist spring opening in the Ansbach district in the state of Bavaria.
