A Pilgrimage Tradition Since 1841
The Kreuzbruderschaft Ochsenfurt was founded in 1841 as a branch of the Würzburg Kreuzbruderschaft; the first pilgrimage to Kreuzberg took place in 1842. Ochsenfurt is located in the Würzburg district (state of Bavaria, Lower Franconia), and the brotherhood's home church is the parish church of St. Andreas.
The Longest Kreuzberg Pilgrimage
With approximately 220 kilometers in six days, the Ochsenfurt brotherhood undertakes the longest foot pilgrimage of all Kreuzberg pilgrim groups. The route leads from Ochsenfurt over several stages – including Erlach, Euerbach, Burkardroth, and Waldberg – to Kreuzberg in the Rhön, the "holy mountain of the Franks." The pilgrimage always begins on August 26th at 4:00 AM and ends on August 31st around 6:00 PM.
Rhythm and Customs
From 1842 to 1951, the pilgrimage took place annually (with interruptions due to war); since 1951, it has been held every two years. The patronal feast is celebrated on September 14th, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, with a church service in St. Andreas. The pilgrims cover the entire distance on foot, sustained by prayer and community.
Participation
Advance registration is required – via the parish office of the Ochsenfurt parish community (phone 09331 8025080, [email protected]). Appropriate clothing and the willingness to walk the entire route are expected.
