Westphalian Rosenmontagszug in the old town of the former county of Rietberg – a jester's parade with over 15,000 spectators and one of the largest children's parades in the region
Ostwestfalen is not a carnival region. While Cologne and Düsseldorf celebrate carnival, most towns between Bielefeld, Paderborn, and Gütersloh remain quietly reserved. But Rietberg is the grand exception. The small town in the former county of Rietberg, now part of the Gütersloh district, has cultivated its own distinct Westphalian-Rhineland carnival since 1934 – and with considerable success. The Rosenmontagszug is now one of the largest in Ostwestfalen-Lippe and attracts over 15,000 visitors to the historic old town every year.
The organizer of Rietberg's carnival is the Grafschaftler Karnevalsgesellschaft, founded in 1934. The name refers to the County of Rietberg, which existed until secularization in 1803. The society stages the entire carnival season from Weiberfastnacht to Ash Wednesday: gala sessions, ladies' session, gala ball, children's session, old ladies' day, and of course, the grand Rosenmontagszug.
The Rietberg Rosenmontagszug is classically Westphalian-Rhineland in character:
A special feature of Rietberg's carnival is the large children's parade on Rosenmontag morning at 10:11 AM. In 2026, around 888 children in costumes will march through the city center – a remarkably high number for a town of 30,000 inhabitants. The children's parade is organized independently and is considered one of the largest children's parades in Ostwestfalen.
Rietberg is located in the Gütersloh district in southern Ostwestfalen-Lippe. With its historic old town around the market square, characteristic half-timbered houses, and the monastery gate, the town is one of the most beautiful small towns in Ostwestfalen. The combination of rural Westphalian character and Rhineland-influenced carnival is Rietberg's trademark – and the reason why carnival buses from Bielefeld, Gütersloh, Verl, and Paderborn roll into town on Rosenmontag.
The 2026 edition follows the classic Rietberg carnival format. Motorized floats assemble by 1 PM, walking groups from 1:30 PM. Registration deadline was February 1, 2026, for motorized floats and February 15 for walking groups. The Grafschaftler Karnevalsgesellschaft coordinates the safety concept with the Rietberg police and fire department.
The Rosenmontagszug is free of charge. No grandstands are set up. Special float requests (sound systems, larger trailers) must be registered with the carnival society (GEMA flat rate €20).
By car via the A2 (exit Rheda-Wiedenbrück or Gütersloh), then B61 to Rietberg. By train to Rheda-Wiedenbrück, then bus line 73 or 74 to Rietberg. Special bus lines are offered for Rosenmontag from Gütersloh, Wiedenbrück, and Verl.
Good spots along Westerwieher Straße, at the Rathausplatz, and on Heinrich-Kuper-Straße. Arrive before 1 PM – spots along the route fill up quickly.
The parade is free. No grandstands are set up.
Restaurants in the old town with mulled wine, beer, and Westphalian classics. Toilets in the city center and at the Rathausplatz.
Costume required – as everywhere in the Rhineland and Westphalia, dressing up is customary. Families should keep an eye on the children's parade in the morning (10:11 AM). Wear weather-appropriate clothing in frosty weather.
