One of Bavaria's largest folk festivals — 16 days of beer tents, amusement park, and tradition on the Loretowiese
The Rosenheim Autumn Festival was first celebrated in 1862, making it one of the oldest folk festivals in Bavaria. From its humble beginnings as a local market, it has grown over more than 160 years into the largest folk festival in southeastern Bavaria. The organizer has long been the Wirtschaftlicher Verband Rosenheim e.V. (Rosenheim Business Association), which manages the organization together with the City of Rosenheim.
The venue is the Loretowiese, a traditional festival ground on Kapuzinerweg in the western city center of Rosenheim. During the festival, four large beer tents and smaller festival tents are set up on the meadow, along with the complete amusement park featuring a Ferris wheel, roller coasters, modern high-tech rides, haunted houses, showman stalls, and snack stands.
The four large beer tents are operated by established Upper Bavarian restaurateurs. The festival beer is supplied by regional breweries (primarily from Auerbräu, the traditional Rosenheim brewery). The menu features classics: roast chicken, pork knuckle, roast pork, roast ox, dumplings, pork sausage, and of course, the obligatory Maß (liter) of beer. Table reservations are essential, especially for weekends and public holidays.
The opening is a central ritual of the festival: On the first Saturday at 11 a.m., the festival parade starts through the Rosenheim city center, with traditional costume groups, marksmen, festival floats from breweries, restaurateurs, and business associations. At 12 p.m., the traditional tapping of the first beer keg takes place in the Auerbräu beer tent by Mayor Andreas März and District Administrator Otto Lederer (as of 2026). This officially opens the festival.
Children's Day on September 2nd offers discounted rides and a special family program. The Thanksgiving festival on September 6th is celebrated with a festive mass and a traditional costume parade. On weekends, the beer tents are already full in the afternoon, and Sunday starts with a Frühschoppen (morning pint) with brass music. The festival concludes with a grand fireworks display over the Loretowiese.
With about 64,000 inhabitants, Rosenheim is the largest city in the Inn Valley and the district capital of the Rosenheim district. The city is located 60 km southeast of Munich, at the intersection of the A8 and A93 motorways. The Autumn Festival attracts visitors from the entire Upper Bavarian pre-Alpine region, the neighboring Chiemgau area, Tegernsee, the Bavarian Inn Valley, and the Tyrolean border region — over a million per season.
The 2026 edition continues the proven format of the Rosenheim Autumn Festival: 16 festival days, four large beer tents with over 12,000 seats combined, a complete amusement park with rides for all generations and sizes, market stalls, showmen, and culinary offerings from pretzels to roast ox.
Opening ritual on Saturday, August 29: At 11 a.m., the traditional festival parade sets off from the city center towards the Loretowiese — with traditional costume groups, marksmen's clubs, marching bands, floats from breweries, restaurateurs, and officials. At 12 p.m., Mayor Andreas März taps the first keg in the Auerbräu beer tent, together with District Administrator Otto Lederer.
