Traditional Whit Sunday custom in the Heidesee district of Gräbendorf — since 1911 — May 24, 2026
Gräbendorf is a district of the municipality of Heidesee in the Dahme-Spreewald district, located about 50 kilometers southeast of Berlin. The municipality of Heidesee, an association of several Brandenburg villages, promotes itself as a recreational area around the Heidesee — bathers from Berlin and the region know the place as a summer spot. Gräbendorf itself is a classic Märkisch village with a village green, a small brick church, and a surprisingly lively custom tradition: the Rosenbaumfest.
The Rosenbaumfest in Gräbendorf has been documented since 1911 — over a century of continuous practice, with only a few interruptions (war, early GDR period). It traditionally takes place on Whit Sunday, so on May 24 in 2026. The custom dates back to the Maypole tradition of Central European villages, but in Gräbendorf it has developed into an independent Pentecost tradition — Maypole + harvest festival character + village identity ritual.
The centerpiece is the "Rosenbaum" — a young larch trunk, which is decorated by young men of the village (who are still unmarried, according to tradition). A woven crown of fir green and colorful ribbons is attached to the top. The men then carry the tree in a solemn procession through the village — a powerful, physically demanding gesture that involves a lot of pride, sweat, and camaraderie. The trunk is erected on the village green, followed by the "Dance under the Crown" — young couples dance around the tree. Afterwards, refreshments, music, and social gathering. The festival traditionally begins around 1 p.m.
The Rosenbaumfest is one of Brandenburg's most beautiful small custom traditions. It is not a tourist event and is not heavily advertised — those who want to be there simply come. The organizer is the Dorfclub Gräbendorf, which has been organizing the festival for decades. Compared to large Maypole festivals in Bavaria or Swabia, the Gräbendorf format is intimate and understated — an hour-long procession, the dance, then refreshments on the village green. For Berliners and Brandenburgers who want to enjoy the Pentecost weekend, it's an unusual day trip into the Märkisch hinterland.
On Whit Sunday, May 24, 2026, the annual Rosenbaumfest will take place in Gräbendorf — one of Brandenburg's oldest continuously maintained village customs. The Dorfclub Gräbendorf has been organizing the festival for decades. The procession traditionally starts around 1 PM with the carrying of the decorated larch trunk through the village to the village green. Detailed program — guest speakers, music groups, catering times — will be communicated by the Dorfclub a few weeks before the Pentecost festival.
