Medieval Rock Open Air at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress with Saltatio Mortis as part of the "Dust & Shadows" Castle Tour
The Festungssommer at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is the most important open-air concert series in the city of Koblenz and one of the most spectacular live venues in Rhineland-Palatinate. High above the Rhine, within the walls of what was once the largest Prussian fortress complex in Europe, concerts of various genres take place between May and September. The organizer is the Koblenz cultural center Café Hahn.
The 2026 concert season kicks off with the Karlsruhe band Saltatio Mortis. The medieval rockers, one of the most successful bands in their genre since the early 2000s, are bringing their "Dust & Shadows" tour to Koblenz. Their blend of bagpipes, medieval drums, hurdy-gurdy, and a solid rock foundation has shaped an entire generation of medieval rock fans – with hits like "Wachstum über alles", "Spielmannsschwur", "Wenn der Hafer sticht", or "Sieben Raben".
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is one of the largest fortress complexes in Europe, towering 118 meters above the Rhine. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley and offers a unique atmosphere for open-air concerts. The stage is set up in the large inner courtyard, with the historic fortress walls forming the natural backdrop. The sound is reflected by the massive walls, giving the concerts a special acoustic effect.
The two concert evenings on May 22nd and 23rd, 2026, are designed as a double tour highlight. Those who experience both evenings can look forward to an extended setlist and the usual spectacular stage show that has made Saltatio Mortis one of the most sought-after live acts in the German-speaking medieval rock scene for years.
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is accessible via the Koblenz Cable Car from the Rhine riverbank, offering one of the most spectacular arrivals for a concert in Germany. Alternatively, there is a shuttle service between the city center and the fortress, organized by the event promoter. The cable car also operates with extended hours on concert evenings.
The two concerts by Saltatio Mortis on May 22nd and 23rd, 2026, will mark the start of the 2026 Festungssommer season. The "Dust & Shadows" Castle Tour is the official designation of the tour package. The setlist, in keeping with the band's tradition, will include both old classics and newer songs from the Karlsruhe band. Detailed setlists are not communicated in advance by the organizer.
