The Funfair in East Berlin

While classic craft Christmas markets around the Konzerthaus or Charlottenburg Palace set up their stalls in Berlin-Mitte and Charlottenburg, the Weihnachtsrummel Helle Mitte follows a different concept: less market romance, more fairground. The focus is on rides and family entertainment — Hellersdorf thus gets its own Advent funfair right on its doorstep every year.

Location on Alice-Salomon-Platz

The venue is Alice-Salomon-Platz in the center of Hellersdorf (district of Hellersdorf, Marzahn-Hellersdorf borough). The square is framed by the Helle-Mitte-Center, the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences, and the Hellersdorf subway station — the U5 line stops directly at the event grounds, making the funfair easily accessible by public transport.

Rides and Fairground Atmosphere

The classic program includes:

• Carousel — the classic at every German funfair
• Dodgems for families and teenagers
• Break Dance — an adrenaline ride for the brave
• Miniature Railway — a short ride for the little ones
• Game stalls and lucky dips with prizes

In addition, stalls distributed around the square cater to the culinary side of the funfair: mulled wine, bratwurst, candied almonds, sweets, crêpes, and other classics of winter street food.

Hellersdorf as a Venue

The Hellersdorf district is part of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf borough in the east of Berlin — characterized by the large prefabricated housing estates built in the 1980s and by the now much greener, more mixed neighborhood structure. Alice-Salomon-Platz and the surrounding "Helle Mitte" form the urban center of the district: shopping mall, subway hub, event space. The Christmas funfair has been a firm fixture in the neighborhood calendar for years — distinguishing it from the more tourist-oriented markets in the city center.

Free Admission — But Not Everything Included

Entry to the funfair grounds itself is and remains free. Payment is per ride and at the stalls — prices vary depending on the ride and showman.
