About Frankenwald Trail

The Crazy Runners Frankenwald Trail is a family-friendly trail running event in the heart of the Frankenwald Nature Park in Upper Franconia. The start and finish are at the Sportheim Silberstein in Geroldsgrün, Hof district. The routes, which are 95 percent natural paths and trails, range from the eight-kilometer Mini Trail to the challenging Ultra Trail of over 50 kilometers. A children's run makes the event an experience for the whole family.

Trail Running in the Heart of the Frankenwald

The Crazy Runners Frankenwald Trail is an annual running event in the Frankenwald Nature Park, one of Bavaria's most heavily wooded low mountain ranges. Organized by TSV Dürrenwaid e.V. together with the Crazy Runners Team Frankenwald, the event combines sporting challenge with the beauty of the Upper Franconian natural landscape.

Start and Finish at Sportheim Silberstein

The meeting point is Sportheim Silberstein at Silberstein 64, 95179 Geroldsgrün, in the Hof district of Upper Franconia. All races start from here into the surrounding nature park. Around 95 percent of the routes run on natural paths and trails – a true trail experience away from asphalt roads.

The Routes

  • Mini Trail: approx. 8 km with approx. 200 meters of elevation gain – ideal for beginners
  • Short Trail: approx. 15 km with moderate elevation gain
  • Long Trail: approx. 30 km with about 1,000 meters of elevation gain
  • Ultra Trail: over 50 km with around 2,000 meters of elevation gain for experienced trail runners
  • Kids Race: children's run for the youngest participants

Family Running Event for Young and Old

The organizers describe the Frankenwald Trail as a "family running event for young and old." In addition to the sporting competition, community is the focus. For 2026, ITRA points will be awarded for the longer distances for the first time, which also enhances the trail for ambitious ultra-runners.

The Crazy Runners Frankenwald Trail 2026 will take place on July 25, with bib pickup already on the evening before, July 24. The start and finish are at Sportheim Silberstein in Geroldsgrün. From the Mini Trail to the Ultra Trail of over 50 km – with ITRA points for the first time.

The 2026 edition of the Crazy Runners Frankenwald Trail takes place on Saturday, July 25, 2026, starting at 8 a.m. at Sportheim Silberstein in Geroldsgrün. Bib pickup is also possible on Friday, July 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. The Mini Trail (approx. 8 km), Short Trail (approx. 15 km), Long Trail (approx. 30 km), and Ultra Trail (over 50 km) are offered, as well as a children's run. New for 2026: ITRA points will be awarded for the longer distances. Around 95 percent of the routes run on natural paths and trails in the Frankenwald Nature Park.

Getting There

Geroldsgrün is located in the Hof district of Upper Franconia. Arrive via the A9 (exit Berg/Bad Steben) or A72/A93, then continue on country roads towards Geroldsgrün/Silberstein. The start and finish is Sportheim Silberstein, Silberstein 64, 95179 Geroldsgrün.

Online registration is via datasport.de. Late registrations on-site are possible for an additional fee, as long as places are available. Starting fees vary depending on the distance and registration date.

Tip

Trail running experience is recommended for the longer routes; sturdy profile shoes are required.
