Three Days Dedicated to Riesling
Riesling is the king grape of the Mosel. It finds ideal conditions on the steep slate terraces around Valwig, producing wines of remarkable minerality, precision, and ageing potential. The Apolloweg vineyard sites above the village – named after the rare Apollo butterfly – are among the most exposed and highest quality vineyards in the Middle Mosel.
The Rieslingfesttage, held on the first weekend of September, have made this viticultural speciality their programme theme. Unlike most Mosel wine festivals, which offer a broad selection of Riesling, Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau, and sparkling wine specialities, the Valwig Rieslingfesttage focus exclusively on the king grape. This thematic focus makes the event a must-attend for Riesling lovers, sommeliers, and wine professionals from across the region.
The programme includes vertical tastings of individual vineyard sites over several vintages (allowing you to experience, for example, how a “Valwiger Herrenberg” Riesling develops over five or ten years), guided vineyard comparisons (several vintners simultaneously present their interpretation of the same site), thematic workshops on vinification and ageing, and Master Class tastings with sommelier accompaniment.
In addition, Valwig's vintners open their courtyards for open tastings, allowing even non-professional wine lovers to experience the full spectrum of Valwig Rieslings. Mosel-typical specialities – Riesling wild ragout, salmon trout, Mosel cheese – accompany the tastings and demonstrate how Riesling and cuisine harmonize perfectly.
The Rieslingfesttage 2026 in Valwig will take place from Monday, September 7th, to Wednesday, September 9th. The festival venues are the courtyards of Valwig's vintners, the market square in the village centre, and selected rooms for the Master Class tastings. The organizer is the Valwig Vintners' Association.
