Classical festival in honor of the composer amidst the Bavarian mountains
Garmisch-Partenkirchen was Richard Strauss's chosen home for decades. The composer drew inspiration from the spectacular mountain world of southern Bavaria in his villa at the foot of the Alps. The Richard Strauss Days celebrate this heritage and make the connection between his work and the landscape immediately tangible.
The festival includes chamber concerts, symphony concerts, song recitals, and matinees. In 2026, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra under Conductor in Residence Rémy Ballot will present the symphony concerts. Renowned ensembles such as the Nymphenburg String Soloists, the Dresden Chamber Soloists, and the vocal ensemble amarcord will complement the program.
The festival concept includes musical hikes through the Werdenfelser Land, a classical "Brotzeit" (snack), the culinary format "Eating like Strauss," a cultural breakfast, and the open-air evening "Strauss in the Park." Theater also has its place: Patrick Süskind's "The Double Bass" will be performed scenically.
A special highlight of the 2026 edition is the finale on June 14th with the opera "Salome" in a chamber orchestra arrangement by Klemens Vereno, the first time in this form in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The festival thus connects to the composer's grand operatic tradition.
Organized by GaPa Kultur gGmbH, the Richard Strauss Days are among the most important classical music festivals in the Bavarian Alps. They combine top-class music with the special ambiance of the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and strengthen the cultural profile of the district.
The 2026 edition runs for nine days from June 6th to 14th. The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra under Rémy Ballot will present the symphony concerts, including "Death and Transfiguration" on June 13th and "Metamorphoses" for 23 solo strings at the matinee on June 14th.
The finale on June 14th will feature the opera "Salome" in Klemens Vereno's chamber orchestra arrangement, a co-production with the Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy. The program is complemented by song recitals, a soirée with male choir works, musical hikes, and the culinary format "Eating like Strauss."
Tickets for individual concerts are available through the official festival website. Prices vary depending on the event and venue.
By train: Garmisch-Partenkirchen is easily accessible via the Bayerische Regiobahn and long-distance services from Munich. By car via the A95 and B2. Venues are spread throughout the town; a concert visit can be well combined with a mountain hike.
Tickets are available through the official festival website and local ticket outlets. Musical hikes and culinary formats are limited.
Early booking of accommodation and tickets is recommended, as the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is very busy during the festival.
