Castle Culture in a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Residenztage Bayreuth & Sanspareil is an annual cultural and classical music festival organised by the Bavarian Palace Department in cooperation with the Bayreuth Tourist Information Centre. The centrepiece is the Margravial Opera House — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012 and one of the most beautiful preserved baroque theatres in Europe, built in 1748 under Margravine Wilhelmine of Bayreuth, Frederick the Great's favourite sister.
20 Years — 'Everything Seems Natural'
In 2026, the Residenztage will celebrate their 20th anniversary under the motto 'Everything Seems Natural'. This theme connects baroque architecture with garden and landscape art, running through the entire programme at various venues in the Bayreuth district and the city of Bayreuth.
Opening with the Munich Radio Orchestra
The festive opening on Friday evening features a concert by the Munich Radio Orchestra in the Margravial Opera House. Works by Handel, Bach, and Mozart transport the audience to the glittering world of the 18th-century court — including Georg Friedrich Handel's 'Water Music', with soprano Regula Mühlemann and trumpeter Mario Martos Nieto, conducted by Ivor Bolton.
Three Venues, Packed Programme
Over the weekend, three locations open their doors: the Margravial Opera House with its museum, the New Palace with its Court Garden, and Sanspareil with its Rock Garden and the restored Oriental Building. The programme includes behind-the-scenes glimpses of baroque stage technology ('Pulling Strings and Turning Cranks'), expert discussions in the palace rooms, craft workshops, family activities, and themed walks connecting architecture and landscape design.
Bayreuth and Wilhelmine's Legacy
Bayreuth, an independent city in the state of Bavaria, is world-renowned for the Richard Wagner Festival — but the margravial heritage of Wilhelmine is at least as formative. The Residenztage brings this World Heritage site to life in all its breadth once a year, connecting Bayreuth with Sanspareil in the district to form a joint cultural weekend.
