About Bayreuth Easter Festival

The Bayreuth Easter Festival is the annual concert series of the International Young Orchestra Academy (IJOA) — a guest in Bayreuth, Selb, and Jena since 1995. The venue for the Bayreuth concert is the Margravial Opera House (UNESCO World Heritage). 2026 marks the 32nd edition: on May 1, 2026, at 7:30 PM, under the title »ZugLuft meets Festival Brass — Airs and Atmospheres«. The focus is on the development of the trombone and virtuosic brass ensembles, led by Prof. Erich Rinner and Alexander Richter.

Young Musicians, Historic Setting

The Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012 — a preserved original example of German Baroque theatre from the 18th century. It is precisely here that the Bayreuth Easter Festival has been held since 1995: the concert series of the International Young Orchestra Academy (IJOA), a cultural and social foundation that brings together musicians from around the world in Bayreuth, Selb, and Jena around Easter time.

Concept of the IJOA

  • Young Musicians from Around the World: The IJOA annually gathers musicians of international origin who develop a program together through workshops and rehearsals.
  • Charity Aspect: The festival has a distinct social mission — proceeds benefit social projects, traditionally for sick children.
  • Three Venues: Bayreuth (Margravial Opera House), Selb, and Jena (Volkshaus) are visited annually.
  • Artistic Direction: Prof. Erich Rinner has shaped the festival musically for years.

State and Cultural Context

Bavaria, Upper Franconia administrative region, independent city of Bayreuth. Bayreuth is the Wagner city — the festival determines the international perception of the city. But Bayreuth also has a rich baroque tradition, honored as World Heritage in the Margravial Opera House. The Bayreuth Easter Festival utilizes this second, lesser-known pillar of Bayreuth's musical culture — and the Margravial Opera House, with its 500 seats and historic acoustics, is one of Germany's special concert halls.

Bayreuth Easter Festival — edition 2026

The 32nd Bayreuth Easter Festival presents on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 7:30 PM in the Margravial Opera House the concert evening »ZugLuft meets Festival Brass — Airs and Atmospheres«. The internationally composed trombone quartet »ZugLuft« and a twelve-member brass ensemble with percussion play works by Mendelssohn, Bach, and Bartók, conducted by Alexander Richter.

Concert 2026 — »Airs and Atmospheres«

On May 1, 2026, at 7:30 PM, the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth will transform into a stage for brass virtuosos. The evening is titled »ZugLuft meets Festival Brass — Airs and Atmospheres« and is structured as a two-part concert.

In the first part, the internationally composed trombone quartet »ZugLuft« presents a musical journey through the development of the trombone — from historical origins to the present day. In the second part, a large ensemble of twelve brass players and a percussionist unfolds a magnificent sound. The program includes works by Mendelssohn, Bach, and Bartók, conducted by Alexander Richter.
