Alpine hut village in the courtyard of the Old Palace
The Bayreuth Winter Village is not the city's classic Christmas market – that is its own, much older tradition on the market square. The Winter Village is a private initiative since 2004: On 580 square meters in the courtyard of the Old Palace, the team around Max Vogel builds an Alpine hut village every year, which is considered the "living room of the city center" in Bayreuth.
The concept is decidedly Alpine – not Franconian-rustic, but like a ski lodge in the Tyrolean mountains. Wooden benches, fabric curtains, antlers, snow decorations, lots of wood, lots of attention to detail. The huts are handcrafted; the team builds them up and takes them down every year. In the glow of fairy lights and candles, an atmosphere is created that tastes much more like a mountain vacation than a Christmas market routine.
Unlike most Christmas markets, the Winter Village opens as early as mid-October – and remains open until December 31st. This covers not only the Advent season but also the transition months of October/November (perfect for after-work drinks in cool autumn weather) and the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve (when the regular Christmas market has already closed).
Culinary offerings focus on regional, but Alpine dishes: cheese raclette, Tiroler Gröstl, Käsespätzle, Flammkuchen, bratwurst from a charcoal grill, gingerbread hearts, candied almonds. Drinks: Hüttenfieber – the in-house mulled wine, presented in a new variation each year –, mulled beer, hot apple cider, punch, schnapps, coffee. Self-service in the hut village style.
The Winter Village is not just a market, but an event venue. Daily music and event program: 90s parties, après-ski evenings, live bands, children's program on weekends, DJ sets, theme nights. The atmosphere late in the evening is often that of a ski lodge in high season.
Bayreuth is world-famous for the Bayreuth Festival and Richard Wagner. But the city has its own, less well-known identity in winter: cozy, Franconian-Upper Franconian, with a baroque city center, the Margravial Opera House (UNESCO World Heritage), and an active student scene. The Winter Village is an important meeting point for students, young professionals, and families – a meeting point that shapes city life for months.
The Winter Village is free to enter – no admission ticket, no reservation needed. Those who come sit where there is space; those who leave return their mug with a deposit.
The 2026 season will follow the established pattern from mid-October to New Year's Eve. The opening date of October 15th is an estimate based on previous years' dates – final confirmation will be provided in late summer 2026 on the website.
