Summer festival of the angling club «Frohsinn»

Oderwitz, a village of around 5,000 inhabitants in the Görlitz district of Upper Lusatia, is home to the angling club «Frohsinn» e. V., which has shaped the village's angling club life for generations. Once a year, the club opens its grounds to the public for the Fischerfest — in 2026 on Thursday, August 13. A sociable summer festival that combines the tradition of fishing with the camaraderie of the club members.

Freshly caught fish directly from the club

The highlight of the festival is the fish cuisine: smoked fish straight from the smoker, grilled trout and carp, baked fish, and fish soup — prepared by the club members themselves. The fish come from the club's ponds or from friendly fish farmers in Upper Lusatia, a region known for its carp farming. «Oberlausitzer Karpfen» (Upper Lusatian Carp) has a geographical tradition here: pond systems for fish farming have been established in the region for over 700 years.

Entertainment and socialising

In addition to the fish cuisine, the festival offers live music on a small stage (regional bands, singer-songwriters), games for children (throwing games, quiz questions about angling), a raffle for the benefit of the club, and demonstration angling for interested visitors who want to learn about angling techniques. Visitors can chat with the members — many have been fishing in the ponds around Oderwitz for decades and know the waters of southern Upper Lusatia like the back of their hand.

Oderwitz and the Upper Lusatian pond landscape

Oderwitz is located in the southeastern Upper Lusatian highlands, nestled in a landscape of meadows, forests, and small ponds. The nearby Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape with its thousands of fishponds was recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1996 — Oderwitz's northern neighbour is one of the most ecologically important freshwater pond landscapes in Central Europe. The Fischerfest combines this landscape tradition with sociable club life.
