A Week of Culture in the Hamburg Metropolitan Area

Henstedt-Ulzburg, the largest municipality in the Segeberg district with around 30,000 inhabitants, has been organizing the KuKuHU Art and Culture Week as an annual festival since 2009. The 18th edition in 2026 marks impressive consistency for a format of this size — for a week, exhibitions, concerts, theater, and workshops are spread across various venues in the municipality, from the Götzberg Mill to the Kreuzkirche.

Two Venues, Two Weekends

KuKuHU is structured around two main axes:

  • Götzberg Mill (Opening weekend including Whit Monday) — the historic mill with its Mill Festival, mill tours, classic cars, and live music
  • Bürgerhaus Beckersbergstraße (Closing weekend) — arts and crafts market with creative workshops, fairy tale program, and café

In between, there are events in the Kreuzkirche, Kulturkate, and other community spaces.

Program Highlights

  • Opening Ceremony at the Götzberg Mill with a welcome address by the mayor and HUM-Marketing
  • Mill Festival on Whit Monday — Buckwheat pastry baking, live music in the festival tent, mill tours, children's program
  • Art Exhibitions by regional and national artists in the community's premises
  • Concerts in the Kreuzkirche and Kulturkate
  • Theater performances and readings
  • Workshops for children and adults (pottery, painting, crafts)
  • Arts and Crafts Market on the last weekend in front of the community center with creative workshops and fairy tale program

The Special Charm of the Götzberg Mill

The Götzberg Mill is a restored 19th-century Dutch windmill — a landmark of the municipality of Henstedt-Ulzburg. During the Mill Festival on Whit Monday, it opens its doors for mill tours, and the traditional Buchweizengebäck (buckwheat pastry) is baked on-site — a true Holstein specialty that can be tasted here in its celebrated form.

In the Segeberg District, Schleswig-Holstein

Henstedt-Ulzburg is located in the Segeberg district, approx. 25 km north of Hamburg, and is directly accessible via the S-Bahn suburban train. The municipality is considered one of the most successful examples of a vibrant cultural life in the Hamburg metropolitan area — KuKuHU is its annual flagship event.

KuKuHU — edition 2026

The 18th KuKuHU runs from May 25 to 31, 2026. It opens on Whit Monday, May 25, at 10:30 AM at the Götzberg Mill. Whit Monday is entirely dedicated to the Mill Festival (11 AM–6 PM) with homemade buckwheat pastries, live music in the festival tent, mill tours, and a children's program. The closing event is the arts and crafts market on May 30/31 at the Bürgerhaus Beckersbergstraße with creative workshops and a fairy tale program. Free admission.

18th Edition

With its 18th edition, KuKuHU establishes itself as a fixture in the cultural calendar of the Hamburg metropolitan area. Mayor Ulrike Schmidt and the HUM-Marketing team curate the program in cooperation with local artists, associations, and cultural institutions.
