Reinbek — Gateway to Hamburg in the Sachsenwald Forest
Reinbek is a town with around 28,000 inhabitants in the Stormarn district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located on the eastern outskirts of Hamburg. The Bille river flows through the town and empties into the castle pond at Reinbek Castle. With its residential location between the Sachsenwald forest and Hamburg, Reinbek is one of the most desirable residential towns in the commuter belt of the Hanseatic city.
Reinbek Castle — Renaissance Moated Castle
Reinbek Castle was built between 1572 and 1576 by Duke Adolf I of Holstein-Gottorf and is one of the few surviving Renaissance castles in Northern Germany. The three-story brick building with stepped gables and hipped roofs stands by the castle pond and today houses the registry office, a conference, and a cultural center. From the castle courtyard, the view opens up to the pond and the adjacent castle park—a setting that is ideal for a Christmas market.
