Regional Market Wolmirstedt — The Magdeburger Börde in Autumn Attire
Wolmirstedt is a small town 18 kilometers north of Magdeburg, in the Börde district. Its history is closely linked to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, and the central point of reference to this day is the Schlossdomäne — a former archiepiscopal estate with a castle, park, and farm buildings, which today serves as a museum, event venue, and town meeting place.
The Schlossdomäne hosts the regional market twice a year: in spring and autumn. The autumn edition in mid-September coincides with the harvest season and brings together what the region between Magdeburg and Haldensleben produces: apples from the Börde, honey from the scattered orchards, asparagus in spring, now it's pumpkins, potatoes, pumpkin seed oil. In addition, there are artisans, potters, basket weavers, and nurseries with perennials for the autumn garden.
Schlossdomäne as a Backdrop
What distinguishes the market from the usual weekly market is the setting. The Schlossdomäne, with its triangular castle courtyard, the baroque Kavalierhaus, and the restored stables, provides a historic backdrop that enhances the market atmosphere. The museum opens its exhibitions for the market date, and there is usually a small supporting program with music, demonstrations of old craft techniques, or a children's area with hay bales.
Börde — The Granary of Saxony-Anhalt
The Magdeburger Börde is considered one of the most fertile landscapes in Europe. Black soil, vast fields, a farming tradition that dates back to Slavic times. The Wolmirstedt regional market is one of the most direct ways to get to know this agriculture — not through the window dressing of the tourism industry, but through an honest sales table.
