Festival service, lecture, and organ concert on October 31st in Luther's birthplace
When Reformation Day is celebrated on October 31st, the Luther Town of Eisleben has a clear home advantage: Martin Luther was born here in 1483 – in what is now the Mansfeld-Südharz district in the state of Saxony-Anhalt – and he died here in 1546. It's no wonder that Reformation Day is observed with particular intensity in this city. The spiritual center of the celebrations is the St. Andrew's Church, the monumental late Gothic hall church on the market square, where Luther delivered his last four sermons from January 31st to February 14th, 1546.
For years, the program has successfully combined liturgy, theological reflection, and church music highlights. It begins at 10 a.m. with the Festival Service in St. Andrew's – a classic Protestant preaching service with choir, festive organ music, and the traditional reading of Luther's 95 Theses. Afterwards, the neighboring Luther House invites you to a public lecture, which each year illuminates a different topic related to the Reformation and Protestant culture – from the history of hymns to the significance of Protestant hymnals to Luther's social impact in the mining regions of the Mansfeld Land.
The highlight of the day is the Organ and Chamber Concert at 5 p.m. in the freshly restored acoustics of St. Andrew's Church. Since the historic organ was rededicated in 2025, the instrument once again shines in full splendor, and organist Thomas Ennenbach designs the Reformation concert together with the renowned Central German Chamber Orchestra. The program regularly features works by those composers who have given depth to Protestant church music: Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Josef Rheinberger, complemented by modern soundscapes such as Denis Bédard or Francis Poulenc.
Eisleben is more than just a day trip destination on this day – it is a living piece of history. The town is located on the eastern edge of the Harz Mountains and, along with its Luther sites, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. Those who spend Reformation Day here are not only offered a high-quality spiritual and musical program but also breathe the atmosphere in which the Reformation once became human.
While Reformation Day has been a public holiday in Saxony-Anhalt since 2018, it has always played a central role in Eisleben. The parish of Lutherstadt Eisleben – an association of the congregations of St. Andrew's, St. Peter and Paul's, and St. Nicholas' – pools its resources for this day and ensures that tradition and the present are combined. In addition to the main events, there are additional devotions, costumed themed tours through the Luther sites, and readings throughout the town.
October 31, 2026, falls on a Saturday – the perfect condition for a full Reformation Day in the Luther Town of Eisleben. Three program points structure the day: morning festival service, noon lecture at the Luther House, and evening concert in St. Andrew's Church. In between, there is time for a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble.
The musical program in the festival concert combines baroque and romantic organ literature with modern soundscapes – Canadian Denis Bédard, late Romantic Josef Rheinberger, and French modernist Francis Poulenc offer a sophisticated cross-section of five centuries of Protestant musical culture.
Additional devotions and costumed themed tours of the Luther sites complement the program – details will appear on the website of the Eisleben Protestant Church.
