Knights, jesters, and merchants on the market square — annually on the second weekend of November for Luther's birthday
Martin Luther was born in Eisleben on November 10, 1483 — and for years, the city in the present-day Mansfeld-Südharz district in the state of Saxony-Anhalt has celebrated his birthday with a two-day medieval spectacle on the historic market square. The concept attracts thousands of visitors year after year: while the towers of St. Andreas Church and St. Ann Church rise in the background, the late 15th century returns for a weekend amidst the half-timbered houses.
You enter the market and are immediately enveloped by a dense atmosphere: knights in full armor compete in tournaments, archers demonstrate their accuracy, an axe thrower invites participation. In the camps of the medieval reenactors, people cook, forge, weave, and felt — historical crafts as they were actually practiced in Luther's time in the Mansfeld region, as the area was a center of copper mining back then. Merchants offer historical garments, jewelry, candles, herbs, oils, leather goods, and mead at market stalls. A true journey through time — but one that's fun.
Highlights of the program include the festive parades, with Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora as the main figures, followed by a retinue of knights, monks, market traders, and musicians. Jesters, jugglers, and fire-eaters provide entertainment in between; minstrel music and medieval drum groups provide the sound. On Saturday evening, a grand fire show crowns the day — one of the most spectacular productions in Saxony-Anhalt's medieval calendar.
Families will find a dedicated program: children can carve wood, participate in the children's tournament, visit the wooden carousel, or be transported to past worlds by the storyteller. Adults can have their fortunes told by the fortune teller or indulge in an herbal massage.
The special appeal of this spectacle lies in its location: Eisleben is not only Luther's birthplace and deathplace but was a prosperous mining metropolis as the capital of the County of Mansfeld in the 15th century. The medieval city silhouette with its churches, squares, and alleys is largely preserved to this day — the market square still stands as it was known by the young Luther as a child. The spectacle, therefore, does not build on an abstract idea of the "Middle Ages" but on a concrete historical space. The organizer is the municipal Eigenbetrieb Märkte der Lutherstadt Eisleben, which also organizes the traditional Eisleber Wiesenmarkt in September.
The medieval spectacle for Luther's birthday will again take place in 2026 according to the proven concept on the second weekend of November — which is expected to be November 7 and 8, 2026. The organizer is the municipal company Märkte der Lutherstadt Eisleben.
Based on previous years, around 60–80 participants are expected again: medieval reenactors, merchants, jesters, musicians, and craftspeople, who will fill the market with jousting tournaments, archery, camp life, and festive parades. The grand fire show on Saturday evening has been the highlight for years — it uses the backdrop of the half-timbered facades on the market square for maximum effect.
Detailed program points for 2026 will be published from autumn 2026 on wiesenmarkt.de.
