Advent Market in the Erzgebirge Village

Rechenberg-Bienenmühle, the Erzgebirge village about 35 kilometers south of Freiberg in the Mittelsachsen district — right on the Czech border, nestled in the Saxon Ore Mountains — cultivates a particularly intimate form of Erzgebirge Christmas traditions. Its Rechenberger Weihnachtsmarkt takes place every year on the 3rd Sunday of Advent — in 2026, this will be on Sunday, December 13, from 3 PM to 8 PM. The 25th edition confirms a tradition of associations that is almost a quarter-century old.

Associations as Organizers, Affordable Prices as a Trademark

A characteristic feature of the Rechenberg market is that the local associations — fire department, carnival club, sports clubs, heritage society, RBC (Rechenberger Bienenmühle Club) — run the stalls. This voluntary sponsorship is reflected in the prices: mulled wine, punch, and food are significantly cheaper than at the large commercial Christmas markets in the region. The venue: the square in front of the Karnevalsverein (IMMO) at Alter Rathausplatz in the village center.

RBC-Funken and Santa Claus

Programmatically, the RBC-Funken (the cheerleading dance group of the Rechenberger Bienenmühle Club) present the festival program — they perform their Christmas program with traditional dance forms and cheerleading costumes. Around 5 PM, Santa Claus and angels appear in the square and distribute small gifts to the children — a moment that connects generations of Rechenberg residents with their home village.

Food, Drinks, Erzgebirge Handicrafts

At the association stalls, you can find: mulled wine and punch (warm, well-spiced), chocolate skewers, waffles, potato pancakes (with apple sauce), crêpes, hot chocolate, tea, bratwurst, and the fire department's goulash soup. Regional traders offer Erzgebirge handicrafts from nearby workshops: incense smokers, candle arches, pyramids, wooden figures. Two kilometers away, at the Erzhütte (a sales outlet for Erzgebirge manufactories), opening hours are extended during the Advent weekend.
