Advent market on the historic square in the Ore Mountains
Sayda, in the Mittelsachsen district, is a small mining town in the upper Ore Mountains, situated at an altitude of around 670 meters. When snow lies on the roofs in the final days of Advent and the old town's houses are illuminated with Schwibbögen (candle arches), the historic square in the town center transforms into a Christmas market that thrives on the spirit of Ore Mountain Christmas tradition.
The motto «Tradition — Culture — Contemplation» summarizes its character: Instead of a large market with uniform stalls, there is a manageable ensemble of sales booths from local merchants, craftswomen, and associations, complemented by a colorful stage program with musical entertainment. Lovingly crafted gift ideas from the region, regional specialties, and the typical mulled wine and snack stands complete the offerings.
The Ore Mountains are the cradle of German Christmas culture: Nutcrackers, Schwibbögen, and Christmas pyramids originate from this region. Sayda fits into this cultural landscape. Visitors to the market can also head to other Ore Mountain Christmas markets (Seiffen, Annaberg, Schwarzenberg, Schneeberg) from here and plan an entire Advent excursion.
Around your market visit, a hike on the Rauschenbachtalsperre circular trail or a detour to Sayda's pilgrimage church is worthwhile. The mining town is located in the Ore Mountains/Vogtland Nature Park, in the Mittelsachsen district, and is accessible by car via the B171 from Freiberg.
As every year, the Sayda Town Association, together with the town, organizes the Christmas market on the final Advent weekend. Sales booths from local merchants and craftspeople, mulled wine and snack stands, as well as a colorful stage program with musical entertainment are planned. The exact program will be published a few weeks before the date on the town's website.
The day-by-day program for 2026 will be published on sayda.eu.
