Classical Music in the Historic Imperial Hall since 1969
The Historic Imperial Hall in Regensburg's Old Town Hall is more than just a concert hall: from 1663 to 1806, the Perpetual Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation convened here. Imperial princes, bishops, and envoys met in this unusually proportioned Gothic hall to negotiate the fate of Central Europe. Today, with its carved wooden beam ceiling, historical wall paintings, and subtle lighting, the hall is one of Bavaria's most atmospheric concert venues – and home to the traditional Rathauskonzerte.
The Rathauskonzerte were established in 1969 by the City of Regensburg to keep the cultural significance of the Imperial Hall alive. Since then, the City Cultural Office has presented five concert evenings each season: three in autumn and two in spring. The program ranges from early music and classical chamber music to curated crossover programs featuring new folk music and contemporary classical music. Internationally renowned soloists and ensembles are invited.
The 2025/2026 season began on September 28, 2025, with the Girls' Choir of the Regensburger Domspatzen – a moving start with the famous Regensburg boys' and girls' choir. On October 9, the ensemble MAXJOSEPH presented new folk music in the Imperial Hall with the program »NAU«. On November 2, a Bach program led by Hansjörg Albrecht featured four large-scale cantatas from the Leipzig year 1725, along with the Munich Bach Festival Ensemble.
In Spring 2026, two more concerts await visitors: On May 8, 2026, The Munich Harmonists will return to the Imperial Hall with a nostalgic vocal program. On June 28, 2026, the Christian Benning Percussion Group will present their program »BEAThoven« – an exciting exploration of how Beethoven might compose today with modern percussion instruments (marimba, vibraphone).
Subscriptions are available for the autumn and spring concerts. Tickets can be purchased at the Cultural Office at Haidplatz 8, at the Tourist Information office at Rathausplatz 4, and online via Leoticket. The hall is accessible by elevator, with ramps, accessible restrooms, and induction loops for hearing aids. The Old Town Hall is located in the heart of Regensburg's UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, five minutes from the main train station.
