Radegast — small village, great tradition

Radegast is located in southern Anhalt-Bitterfeld, between the towns of Köthen, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, and Bernburg. Since the administrative reform in 2010, the formerly independent village has belonged to the newly founded city of Südliches Anhalt, a vast administrative unit with numerous districts. The market square with its fountain is the center of village life — and it is precisely here that the community celebrates its Brunnenfest every year.

The tradition of the Brunnenfest is anchored in many villages in central Germany. It dates back to a time when the market fountain was the only source of drinking water and the water it provided was an essential resource. Festival traditions have developed from the grateful use of this lifeline — mostly in late spring, when summer begins and the water supply regains its special significance.

Village life at the fountain

The Brunnenfest in Radegast has the typical character of a down-to-earth village festival: opening on the market square, a festive procession to the fountain, catering by local clubs, a music band, games for children, and a communal gathering in the evening. The volunteer fire department, the sports club, and the local associations share the organization, with the city administration of Südliches Anhalt providing support.

Anhalt-Bitterfeld as a travel region

Those who visit the festival can combine the day with a short tour of Anhalt. Köthen, the Bach town with its magnificent castle chapel, is 20 minutes away. The Bauhaus Dessau can be reached in 30 minutes, and Wörlitz Park in 40 minutes. Radegast itself is a place where you can experience the province of Anhalt as it has been for generations: quiet, village-oriented, with a strong club life.
