The family cycling day in the Sömmerda district
The Tour de Frömmschdt originated from an idea by master baker Bergmann from Frömmstedt, who initiated a cycling tour along the Unstrut cycle path in 2005 — a mix of sports event, family outing, and local festival. The first small tour evolved into a ritualized spectacle with extensive public participation in the villages along the route. The 17th edition was held in 2025, and the 18th is scheduled for 2026.
The route starts at the market square in Sömmerda and follows the Unstrut cycle path: first via Leubingen, Griefstedt, Büchel, and Etzleben to Gorsleben, then via farm tracks and roadside cycle paths through Kannawurf and Kindelbrück to Frömmstedt. 33 kilometers with no significant inclines — suitable for families with children, leisurely cyclists, and seniors.
There is entertainment at several stops along the route: in Büchel, at Kannawurf Castle, and at the Bilzingsleben stone pits (one of the oldest sites of early human settlement in Europe), cyclists can expect music, refreshments, and small activities. Bakery Bergmann traditionally supplies participants at the finish in Frömmstedt with bread, rolls, and coffee.
With up to 1,500 participants per event, the Tour is considered the ultimate family cycling day in the Sömmerda district. It combines physical activity with local pride — many families ride the route together with children and grandparents. Clubs along the route contribute with their own activities, from refreshment stands to musical performances at the Sömmerda market square.
The date is traditionally fixed: the third Saturday in August. In 2026, this will be August 15th. Registration is recommended, but spontaneous participation is also possible. The Tour de Frömmschdt is part of the regional event calendar and is supported by the Sömmerda district and the town of Sömmerda as an important family event.
The 18th Tour de Frömmschdt 2026 adheres to the traditional date. Starting in the morning at Sömmerda market square, a joint ride north along the Unstrut. Along the way, stops with musical programs and refreshments, and at the finish in Frömmstedt, Bakery Bergmanns awaits with bread, rolls, coffee, and small snacks.
Registrations are accepted collectively by the town of Sömmerda and Bakery Bergmanns. Spontaneous participation is possible. A roadworthy bicycle and helmet are recommended — the route is flat and easy to ride.
