Four villages celebrate Harvest Thanksgiving together — traditional service and village program in Dithmarschen
The Erntedankfest (Harvest Thanksgiving) is one of the oldest festival traditions in the agriculturally shaped Schleswig-Holstein: after the completion of the harvest (grain, corn, sugar beet, cabbage), thanks are given in the villages and communities for the year's harvest. The thanks are directed religiously to God, traditionally to nature, and socially to the agricultural community. In the Eidergemeinden, the festival is jointly supported by four villages.
The Eidergemeinden are a loose alliance of four small villages in the Dithmarschen district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein:
Together they lie in the Eider marsh, a fertile piece of Dithmarschen agriculture.
Classic Harvest Thanksgiving festivals in Schleswig-Holstein combine several elements:
The Erntedankfest of the Eidergemeinden is not a major tourist event — it is part of a vibrant rural annual calendar, supported by the parish, village associations, and volunteers. Visitors to the region who attend the festival experience an authentic form of customs preservation, far from commercial glamour.
The Dithmarschen district is one of the most important agricultural regions in Schleswig-Holstein. The Dithmarscher Kohl (Dithmarschen cabbage) cultivation (the largest in Europe) in particular shapes the identity — the region is also called “Europe’s largest cabbage-growing area”. In October, when the cabbage harvest is in full swing and the fields are becoming emptier, the Harvest Thanksgiving festival in the rural communities is particularly present.
The date October 4, 2026, has been confirmed on the official event calendar of the Eidergemeinden (eidergemeinden.de). The exact program schedule (time of service, subsequent program) will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on the website and in the community newsletters.
