A New Town Festival Seeks Its Place

Sandersdorf-Brehna is a comparatively young town: only in 2010 were the municipalities of Sandersdorf and Brehna and surrounding districts merged into a unified municipality. This created a community in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district that is more than the sum of its parts – with 14,000 inhabitants, it is one of the larger towns in the district, located between Halle (Saale) and Leipzig in the south of Saxony-Anhalt.

The young town had long lacked a central town festival. The first edition was held in Petersroda in 2025 – a district with its own festival grounds, which is suitable for a larger open-air event. The second edition follows in 2026; the concept has apparently proven itself. The town festival deliberately relies on the clubs as organizers: sports clubs, local heritage groups, the fire department, schools, and cultural initiatives from all districts present themselves and run their own stalls.

Club Market, Stage, and Fireworks Display

The program follows a proven structure: Opening on Friday evening with a live band and the mayor's speech, continuous stage performances on Saturday with regional bands and dance groups, a family program with bouncy castles and face painting, and a large fireworks display in the evening (weather permitting). Sunday is reserved for a relaxed conclusion.

Petersroda is conveniently located directly on the A9 and B100 motorways – those who want to combine the town festival with a day trip to the Bitterfeld region will reach the Goitzschesee, the huge post-mining lake, or the Industrial Culture Park Bitterfeld-Wolfen in 15 minutes. In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Sandersdorf-Brehna town festival represents the committed attempt of a young unified town to create its own traditions.
