Maifeier Bitburg (Haus Beda Garden)

The May Celebration in the Haus Beda garden is the central kick-off event for the May Day holiday in Bitburg. It traditionally takes place on the eve of May 1st at and in the garden of Haus Beda at Bedaplatz – a central cultural center of the city with event rooms, a gallery, and a spacious garden.

Haus Beda as a Cultural Center

Haus Beda in the city center of Bitburg is named after Saint Bede the Venerable and houses event rooms, exhibition spaces, and a spacious garden. It is the venue for many cultural highlights of the Bitburg year, including concerts, readings, and for years, the Summer Jazz Festival in the Bedagarten. The May Celebration fits into this cultural profile.

Program of the May Celebration

The May Celebration is designed as a convivial start to the May Day holiday. Local clubs, music groups, possibly a brass band, will present the program. Catering will be provided by the participating clubs or by Haus Beda itself, with classic specialties such as bratwurst, draft beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and cake.

Parallel to the central May Celebration, events will take place in the Bitburg districts:

• Erdorf: May Celebration of MV Erdorf on April 30th from 6 PM.
• Masholder: May Hike on May 1st from 10 AM.
• Matzen: May Celebration with local clubs.
• Mötsch: TuS Mötsch, May 1st from 1:30 PM with Maypole raising.
• Stahl: May Celebration of local clubs.

Tradition of May 1st

May Celebrations and Maypole raising have been a firm part of Rhenish Palatinate and Eifel tradition for generations. They mark the final transition from winter to summer and are usually supported by clubs, fire departments, or church groups.
