Berlin's largest family puppet theatre festival in Wuhlheide
FEZ-Berlin – the "Freizeit- und Erholungszentrum" (Leisure and Recreation Centre) in Wuhlheide – is one of Europe's most distinguished children's and youth cultural centres. Located in the middle of the Wuhleider Forst (Oberschöneweide district, Treptow-Köpenick borough), FEZ has been running an extensive family programme for decades. Its Puppet Theatre Festival – founded in 1996 – will celebrate its 30th anniversary edition in 2026. Over these three decades, it has evolved from a small district event into an international festival.
The festival condenses a huge programme into one weekend: around 20 international puppet theatre ensembles from Germany, Europe, and sometimes further afield, with over 80 performances per festival. Performances take place simultaneously on several stages in the main building of FEZ – small family pieces for kindergarten children, technically complex productions for older children, and occasionally adult pieces in the evening. The range extends from classic puppet theatre to contemporary material theatre pieces with black light, object theatre, and digital elements.
The festival is primarily designed as a family event – most performances are aimed at children between two and twelve years old with their accompanying persons. However, the festival also serves as a meeting point for puppet theatre professionals: directors, theatre managers, educators, and festival curators from other cities come to see new productions and make contacts. This dual function is reflected in the programme: some pieces are explicitly marked "for industry professionals".
FEZ is located in the middle of Wuhlheide – a green island between Köpenick, Schöneweide, and the Wuhletal valley. Take the S-Bahn line S3 to S Wuhlheide or tram 27/63 to FEZ-Berlin. By car: parking available directly at FEZ. Tickets can be purchased individually or as a day pass through the FEZ ticketing system. Those planning to spend a whole day at FEZ (which is worthwhile – FEZ also has a swimming pool, climbing facilities, and workshops running concurrently) should opt for the day pass.
The anniversary edition follows the established weekend format: two festival days, parallel stage programmes in the FEZ main building, a spectrum from classic puppet theatre to contemporary productions with material and object theatre. The complete artist and programme list for 2026 will be published by FEZ in late summer/autumn 2026.
Those coming with children should ideally plan in advance which performances are suitable for which age group – the show times are scheduled so that a family can see three to five pieces in one day. Tickets are sold via tickets.fez-berlin.de; advance booking is recommended for popular shows.
Complete list of artists and shows, as well as tickets, available from late summer 2026 at fez-berlin.de and tickets.fez-berlin.de.
Take the S-Bahn line S3 to S Wuhlheide (10 min walk through the park) or tram 27 or 63 to the final stop "FEZ-Berlin". By car, drive through Wuhlheide; FEZ has its own parking facilities.
Tickets available via the FEZ ticketing system (tickets.fez-berlin.de). Various options depending on the number of performances attended; day passes are recommended for families if visiting multiple shows per day.
The FEZ main building offers many other activities parallel to the festival (swimming pool, high ropes course, workshops). If you combine the puppet theatre with a full FEZ day, it's best to arrive in the morning and plan for the entire day. Pack a lunchbox or use the FEZ cafeterias.
