Opening event for the Schützenfest – Election of the Prince on June 26, 2026
The Prinzenschießen is a traditional element of Lügde's riflemen's culture and forms the competition kick-off for the actual Schützenfest, which takes place every year in July. The organizer is the Schützenbruderschaft St. Kilian Lügde, one of the city's traditional associations. The Prince of the riflemen's association for the coming year is determined at the Prinzenschießen – an honor that, in relation to the King, fulfills a subsidiary but nonetheless important role: the Prince supports the King throughout the year with representation duties and takes on his own stage roles at the Schützenfest.
The 2026 Prinzenschießen will take place on Friday, June 26, from 6 PM to 11:55 PM. The unusually precise end time (11:55 PM) is administrative in nature: the event, with official approval, must not run until midnight but ends five minutes before. The shooting itself lasts for several hours with breaks, catering, and – after the Prince is determined – the proclamation and a convivial festive evening.
The actual Schützenfest of the St. Kilian Schützenbruderschaft typically takes place a few weeks after the Prinzenschießen in July – with a bird shooting for the King's title, a festive parade, a high mass, and a coronation ball. The Prinzenschießen is essentially the "preliminary highlight" and involves a closer circle of association members, while the Schützenfest itself involves the entire city.
Lügde, with around 9,700 inhabitants, is a town in the far east of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the district of Lippe, directly on the border with Lower Saxony. Lügde is known regionally primarily for the Osterräderlauf (Rolling of Easter Wheels) – a UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage, where burning wheels filled with straw are rolled down Easter Hill on Easter Sunday evening. This deeply rooted traditional custom shapes the cityscape and club life of Lügde – the Schützenbruderschaft St. Kilian is part of this dense fabric of customs.
In the district of Lippe, the Schützenwesen is a central component of village and small-town life. With bird shooting, King's proclamation, and high mass, the format is structured similarly to the Sauerland and Münsterland regions, but due to Lippe's Protestant tradition, it also has its own accents (e.g., a less pronounced Catholic-religious character than in the Catholic regions of Westphalia).
The 2026 edition is confirmed according to the official city of Lügde event page (luegde.de). The format of the Prinzenschießen as a preliminary event for the Schützenfest has been established for years.
The actual Schützenfest of the St. Kilian Schützenbruderschaft follows a few weeks later (typically in July) with bird shooting for the King's title, a festive parade, high mass, and a coronation ball.
