Three days of Lippian Schützenbrauchtum with a format change in 2026 — Friday to Sunday instead of Saturday to Monday
The Schützenbruderschaft St. Kilian Lügde announced an important change in the festival date for 2026: The Schützenfest is moving from the traditional Saturday-to-Monday format to Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12, 2026. The Lippische Landes-Zeitung reported in detail: The reason for the shift is a reality familiar to many clubs — lack of availability of orchestras and service personnel on Mondays. The festival sequence remains unchanged; the days are simply moved one day forward in the calendar.
Lügde is one of the oldest towns in North Rhine-Westphalia — its history dates back to the 8th century. Lügde is primarily known for the spectacular Osterräderlauf (Rolling Easter Wheels) every Easter Sunday, where burning wooden wheels roll down from Osterberg into the valley. The Schützenfest of the St. Kilian Brotherhood is the second major event in Lügde's annual calendar. The Lippe district, where Lügde is located, is a region with an active Schützenwesen (shooting fraternity tradition) — almost every village has its own brotherhood.
Before the actual Schützenfest, several preparatory shooting events take place:
These preparatory shooting events are important in club life — they bring active marksmen together and set the stage for the main festival.
The actual Schützenfest follows the classic Rhenish/Westphalian three-day structure:
The detailed program structure will be published by the club in the spring of 2026.
The St. Kilian marksmen proudly wear their historic uniforms — during the grand parade on Saturday through Lügde's town center, visitors experience the full spectacle: marksmen with feathered hats, brass bands, drum corps, the King and Queen in ceremonial attire. The Lippian Schützenwesen differs from Rhenish festivals by having a slightly less carnival-like atmosphere — discipline and the club character are more prominent.
The brotherhood bears the name of Saint Kilian — an Irish-Scottish missionary from the 7th century who died as a martyr in Würzburg. In Lippe, Kilian is the patron saint of several churches and brotherhoods. The religious connection is evident during the Schützenfest through the celebratory mass on Saturday or Sunday.
First edition in the new Friday–Sunday format due to lack of orchestra and personnel availability on Mondays. The festival sequence remains unchanged, with weekdays simply moved one day forward. Preparatory shooting at the end of June.
Detailed daily program available on st-kilian-luegde.de before the festival.
Parade and public program: Free admission. Festival tent admission for balls and Festkommers via the brotherhood.
By car: A2 exit Bad Salzuflen, then B252/B7 towards Detmold–Bad Pyrmont–Lügde. By public transport: Bad Pyrmont or Lemgo train station, then bus.

The grand parade on Saturday with the King and Queen in full regalia is the visual highlight. Those who want to explore the Lippian Uplands: combine your Schützenfest visit with a hike in the region around Lügde — the Mergelwand at Isenberg is a local natural highlight.
