A Photography Festival with Ambition

Since its inception, PHOTON has been one of the most ambitious photography festivals in Germany — and the only one of its size in Saarland. For three days, the Illipse Kulturforum in Illingen (Neunkirchen district) transforms into a meeting point for the photography community: professional photographers, ambitious amateurs, career starters, and hobby photographers gather, listen to lectures, participate in workshops, and browse the photo fair.

Motto 2026: “Great things always start small”

The motto of the 2026 edition — “Great things always start small” — stems from the festival's philosophy itself: PHOTON is a festival without corporate backing, driven by the passion of its organizers. It was initiated by nature and travel photographers Daniel Spohn and Christian Mütterthies (under the label naturimfokus) together with Ulrike Sutter (former cultural officer and founder of photoMission). Mayor Andreas Hübgen serves as patron, and the municipality of Illingen is a co-organizer.

Four Program Focus Areas

The festival rests on four pillars:

• Live Lectures on the Big Screen — Professional photographers present their projects and techniques
• Seminars with experienced industry experts on topics such as wildlife, landscape, image editing, storytelling
• Practical Workshops — Wildlife and smartphone photography, Lightroom, compositing, studio techniques
• Guided Photo Tours around Illingen and in the Bliesgau

In addition, there are outdoor exhibitions around the Illipse and a photo fair where camera equipment manufacturers showcase their cameras, lenses, tripods, and software — both with free admission.

International Top Photographers as Guests

PHOTON regularly attracts international top photographers to Illingen: nature photographers with award-winning contributions to Wildlife Photographer of the Year, professionals from advertising and fashion photography, travel photographers, and reportage greats. For hobby and professional photographers from Saarland and the greater region, PHOTON is a must-attend event.

Discover Illingen

Illingen is located in the Neunkirchen district, easily accessible from Saarbrücken (25 km). Worth seeing are the St. Stephanus Church and the castle ruins. Of particular interest to photographers: the adjacent Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park with its forests and the Bliesgau Biosphere just an hour away.
