Atmospheric evening market in the glow of lights on the Neuen Markt
The market community of Illingen in the Neunkirchen district has a long tradition as a supply center for the Illtal – not for nothing does it bear the nickname "Illtalmetropole". The annual Mondscheinmarkt on the Neuen Markt is an expression of this market tradition, reinterpreted for the darker season: instead of opening at noon in sunshine, it opens only in the evening, when the market square is bathed in an almost magical atmosphere with fairy lights, lanterns, and illuminated stalls.
The market consistently focuses on regional providers: vegetable and fruit farmers from the Illtal, small manufactories from Saarland, street food stalls with hearty Saarland cuisine (Dibbelabbes, Hoorische, Saarland sausage variations) as well as sweet specialties – from candied almonds to crêpes to Christmas cookies. Accompanied by a selection of mulled wine, regional beers, and non-alcoholic punch variations.
In addition, regional craftspeople and artisans present their work: pottery, jewelry, woodwork, knitted items, decorative Advent crafts. Those who think about Christmas presents early will find a select offering here, away from interchangeable mass-produced goods.
A small stage provides atmospheric live music for acoustic accompaniment – mostly regional artists with acoustic sets, sometimes choirs or brass ensembles. The market is tailored for families: children find stalls with toys, hot apple juice, and snacks, and the square itself is traffic-calmed and manageable.
The Mondscheinmarkt is part of a whole series of market events in Illingen, which also include the Spring Market, the Evening Market, and the Illinger Wurstmarkt. Scheduled in the pre-Christmas season, with a first touch of Advent charm, but still clearly autumnal in character – the market fills a gap between the classic harvest festival and the region's later Christmas markets. In the Saarland, it is a popular destination for anyone looking for a market evening with a short journey and a relaxed atmosphere.
On October 23, 2026, the Neuen Markt in Illingen transforms into a luminous market promenade. Regional providers present their specialties – culinary and artisanal – a live stage provides atmospheric music, and the festive lighting gives the market square its special ambiance. Four hours that feel like a small opening of the pre-Christmas season.
Specific performance names will be announced in late summer 2026 at illingen.de.
