Practical information — Illinger Abendmarkt
Getting There
By car via the A8 (exit Illingen) or the A1 (exit Eppelborn), continue to Illingen town centre. By train to Illingen (Saar) station, then a 5-minute walk to Neuer Markt.
Parking
Parking available at the train station, at the town hall, and in the side streets around Neuer Markt. Free in the evening.
On Site
Food and drinks at market and food truck stands, payment partly by card, partly cash. Seating is limited – a small folding cushion or portable stool can be useful.
Tips
Those who prefer it quieter should come at the beginning from 5 p.m. Those looking for atmosphere should come from 7 p.m. when the live music starts. In case of rain, the market is often still held – check the Facebook page of the municipality of Illingen at short notice.
A Market After Work
Normally, the weekly market ends at midday. The Illinger Abendmarkt takes the opposite approach: it starts at 5 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. – exactly when other markets are already packing up. That's what makes it special. Anyone coming from the office can spend the evening with a glass of wine, a snack from a food truck, and live music on the Neuer Markt, instead of driving home again.
When and Where?
Four Wednesday evenings in July, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each time, on the open space Neuer Markt in the centre of Illingen. For 2026: 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th July. Admission free.
The Concept
The focus is on three pillars:
- Regional Suppliers: Direct marketers from Illtal and the surrounding area, small manufactories, farm shops
- Arts and Crafts: Jewellery, ceramics, woodwork, textiles
- Culinary Delights: Food trucks and catering stands with Saarland classics, Flammkuchen, crêpes, regional wines
The Music
Each evening has its own music programme. Acoustic duos, small bands, sometimes DJ sets – always on the stage by the water garden of the Neuer Markt. The standard is surprisingly high: the municipality ensures that the music matches the character of an evening market – not too loud, not too shrill, but lively.
The Neuer Markt – Meeting Point with Water
The Neuer Markt was newly laid out in the late 2000s and offers an unusual feature: a small water garden with a fountain and a small stream that pleasantly cools the square in summer. Combined with the trees, it creates an almost Mediterranean atmosphere – unusual for a Saarland municipality, but that's exactly what makes the Abendmarkt special.
Illingen – Market Tradition Since the Middle Ages
Markets have a long history in Illingen. Early market activity emerged as early as the time of the Lords of Kerpen in the Middle Ages. Today, the 'Illtal metropolis' organises several markets throughout the year – including the traditional Illinger Wurstmarkt, a spring market, and the Abendmarkt as a summer innovation.
Who Comes?
Locals from the Neunkirchen district, families, young adults from the surrounding area. The market is manageable, friendly, and without tourist noise – the typical Saarland summer feel-good event.
