The Resident Orchestra of the Three Venues
The Vorpommern Philharmonic Orchestra is the professional symphony orchestra of the Theater Vorpommern and performs at the theatre's three venues: Greifswald, Stralsund, and Putbus. It accompanies the opera and operetta productions of the theatre and also offers its own symphony concert series.
Nine Concerts Per Season
Each season features around nine Philharmonic Concerts — each typically performed once in Greifswald, once in Stralsund, and sometimes in Putbus. In Greifswald, the Kaisersaal of the Stadthalle is the traditional concert hall.
Repertoire for the 2025/26 Season
The current 2025/26 season includes works by Jean Sibelius, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Maurice Ravel, Modest Mussorgsky (Pictures at an Exhibition in Ravel's orchestration), Kurt Weill, Arvo Pärt, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Antonín Dvořák. This is supplemented by Baroque works (Purcell, Handel) and Romantic programs featuring Weber, Strauss, Brahms, and Elgar.
Public Dress Rehearsals
A special feature of the series: on the evening before each concert, there is usually a public dress rehearsal (»Öffentliche Probe«) on the program — an opportunity to experience the orchestra in preparation. In Greifswald, the dress rehearsal is usually scheduled for 7 PM in the Kaisersaal.
Local Context
Greifswald is part of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Theater Vorpommern is a three-part stage with three venues — Greifswald (main administration), Stralsund, and Putbus on Rügen — and shapes the cultural landscape of Vorpommern with its own productions, the Eldena Summer Theatre, and the symphony concert series.
