Alsdorf — Industrial City with Castle Park
Alsdorf is located in the Aachen district (Aachen region) north of the imperial city and, with around 47,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest cities in the region. Characterized by mining and industrial history (Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein), Alsdorf also has green lungs — especially the Burgpark with the historic Schloss Alsdorf and the nearby Annapark. Together, these two parks form the scenic heart of the city — and once a year, during the Advent season, they become the stage for the Phantastisches Wintermärchen.
Castle Park with Castle as a Fairy Tale Backdrop
The venue is the Burgpark Alsdorf with the striking Schloss Alsdorf, a former moated castle whose current form dates back to the 18th century. The park with its old trees, water features, and the castle building offers a backdrop that no newly built market square can imitate. When the fairy lights in the trees illuminate at dusk, the castle is lit up, and stalls with their illuminated shop windows are set up in rows, the "Wintermärchen" feeling that gives the market its name emerges.
Opening with Christmas Parade on November 28
The official opening takes place on Friday, November 28, 2026: A Christmas parade starts at Annapark and winds its way through Alsdorf's city center to the Castle Park — with lights, music, Santa Claus, and angels. Opening ceremony in the Castle Park, then the market runs until December 6 (St. Nicholas Day).
What Makes the Market Special
- Stalls with Mulled Wine and Punch — from traditional Glühwein to non-alcoholic punch varieties and specialties like eggnog and Feuerzangenbowle
- Snacks — Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), crêpes, candied almonds, gingerbread hearts, marzipan
- Crafts and Gifts — Woodwork, glassblowing, candle makers, knitwear, Advent wreaths, Christmas tree decorations
- Stage Program — Performances by local choirs, brass bands, school choirs, music clubs; individual concerts as highlights
- Light Installations — Castle lighting, illuminated treetops, light arches over paths, small projections
- Carousel — historic carousel for children
Stefan Heffels and the Animal Park Support Association
The organizer is the Alsdorf Animal Park Support Association, led by Stefan Heffels. The nearby Alsdorf Animal Park is one of the largest free animal parks in North Rhine-Westphalia and is financed primarily through donations and events like the Wintermärchen. Proceeds from stall rentals and donations benefit the animal park — so anyone drinking mulled wine or buying a bratwurst is contributing.
Opening Hours
On weekdays, the market runs from 4 PM to 9 PM — so after work, with the most beautiful light at dusk. On weekends, it opens from 2 PM, allowing families with children to visit for longer. The last day is Sunday, December 6 (St. Nicholas).
Alsdorf and Surroundings
For those combining the market visit with a day trip: Aachen, with its famous Christmas market around the cathedral and town hall, is 15 minutes away; markets are also held at the same time in Würselen, Eschweiler, Stolberg, and the neighboring Eifel region. The nearby Eifel Nature Park offers winter hikes.
