The largest village fair in Saarland – four days of Volksfest around Pentecost
For generations, the Pfingstkirmes Eppelborn has been the most important Volksfest in the Saarland municipality of Eppelborn (Neunkirchen district). It starts on Pentecost Saturday and ends on Pentecost Tuesday with a firework display – four days of rides, food stalls, shooting galleries, and carousels. Its scale is unmatched in Saarland: you rarely find so many showmen and such a cohesive fairground atmosphere at comparable village fairs.
The venue is the spacious park and fairground Am Güterbahnhof in the center of Eppelborn. The location on the former railway site is reminiscent of the region's industrial past, where mining and railways were closely intertwined. Today, the area is primarily a festival meadow in spring and summer. The combination of a central location, good public transport connections, and a large fairground has allowed the Pfingstkirmes to grow over the years.
While Pentecost Saturday and Sunday are traditionally populated by families and young people, Pentecost Tuesday is considered the actual highlight. On this day, the traditional Pfingstmarkt (Pentecost market) takes place around the fairground – a market with stalls from all over Saarland and nearby Lorraine. In the evening, the closing firework display over the fairground follows.
In addition to the classic showman attractions, the culinary classics of a Saarland fair dominate the scene: Lyoner sausages, Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck) from a charcoal grill, crêpes, almonds, and Crémant from the nearby Moselle-Saar region. The region is known for its sausage tradition – it is celebrated at the Pfingstkirmes.
Eppelborn is easily accessible by train from Saarbrücken, Lebach, and Saarlouis; Eppelborn station is not far from the fairground. The Pentecost weekend ensures full parking lots – arriving early or using public transport is recommended.
As every year, the highlights of the Pfingstkirmes are spread over four days: The opening on Pentecost Saturday is family-oriented, and the evenings run late. Pentecost Sunday and Monday continue with the classic fairground experience with roller coasters, bumper cars, carousels, and food stalls. The highlight is traditionally Pentecost Tuesday with the market and closing fireworks.
