Summer Solstice in Sound
Since 1982, France has celebrated the "Fête de la Musique" every year on June 21 — an idea by the then French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang. His spirit: "Everyone is free to express their joy for the return of summer with their instrument." In Chemnitz, the festival has developed its own tradition — in 2026, the 12th edition will take place on Sunday, June 21.
Over 150 Musicians on Three Stages and Five Street Music Areas
From 3 PM to 9 PM, Chemnitz's city center transforms into an open music stage. Over 150 musicians and bands of all genres will perform on three stages in the city center as well as in five street music areas — from classical, singer-songwriter, jazz, pop, rock, hip-hop, to electronic. The program and schedule will be published in advance on the official festival website.
Fifth Expansion into the Cultural Region
2026 marks the fifth edition with a regional expansion. Six cities will celebrate simultaneously: Chemnitz, Burgstädt, Limbach-Oberfrohna, Stollberg, Zwickau, and Zwönitz. Visitors can use public transport to travel between the cities and experience a decentralized festival. This expansion is a direct legacy of Chemnitz European Capital of Culture 2025, which initiated cultural initiatives to network the region.
Food Mile and Free Admission
Admission to all concerts is free. A small "Food Mile" with local restaurants will offer food and drinks. The festival is very family-friendly — children, teenagers, and adults of all generations meet in the urban space on the longest day of the year.
Chemnitz, City Center District, and the Legacy of the 2025 European Capital of Culture
Chemnitz is the third-largest city in Saxony, was the European Capital of Culture in 2025, and is undergoing a phase of cultural repositioning. The Fête de la Musique is one of the festivals that bring this new vitality to the cityscape. The venues are spread across the City Center district, within walking distance of the main train station.
